Daniel Inouye, who spoke in their home on behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign. Standing are Campaign Chairmen Stanley D. Frankel and Robert–H. Naftaly and Vice Chairman Milton Lucow. One of Israel's strongest sup- porters in the U.S. Senate is a Methodist from the state of Hawaii who first learned about the Holocaust as a patient in an army hospital and later became a salesman for Israel Bonds. He is Sen. Daniel Inouye, who was in Detroit last week to speak on behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign at the home of Dr. Joseph and Nancy Jacobson. Sen. Inouye, a Democrat serv- ing his third term in office, deliv- ered — in his own words — a non-partisan speech, declaring that his support of Israel is "a clear case of what is in the na- tional interest of the United States." He said that many of Israel's economic problems find their ori-_ gins in the United States. "If we supply AWACS and F15s to Saudi Arabia, we're forcing the Israelis to spend more money on defense." Sen. Inouye said that Israel's adherence to the Camp David ac- cords — giving up the Sinai, sources of oil and airbases — cost that country more than $10 bil- lion, and he expressed his opinion to Menachem Begin that "Israel . got taken." First chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Inouye called Israeli intelligence the best source of information to the United States, "better than all the NATO nations combined." Handing the Soviets their greatest military defeat in the past decade, the Israelis "taught us how to knock out the SAM sites." A further setback for the Soviets was Israel's capture of "enough armaments to supply five PLO armies." And what is Israel's reward? "We sold Stingers to the Saudis, a perfect weapon for terrorists. We can only pray the Saudis take good care of them." At the same time, "we say 'naughty, naughty' to Israel for invading Lebanon and refuse to sell them F16s." As for the administration's op- position to recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, "With other countries we tell them, 'You select your own capital city.' We don't tell the Japanese 'We want you to make Osaka your capital.' Sen. Inouye, who is not up for re-election until 1986, said he will visit Israel next month to discuss a proposal he plans to make in the next Congress that will provide relief to Israel in its economic dis- tress, relief of some of its debt re- sponsibilities. He urged his listeners — who responded by pledging to the Campaign $1.4 million more than they did last year — to support a strong Israel because "If your ac- tivity begins to diminish, support in Congress will also diminish." Buber specialist to give Bargman talk at Jewish Center Dr. Maurice Friedman The final lecture in the Midras, ha's 29th annual Bargman Series will take place 8 p.m. Thursday at the main Jewish Community Center as part of the annual Jewish Book Fair. The theme for this year's Mina and Theodore Bargman Lectures is "The Mak- ing of Our Precious Legacy: The Emergence of the Modern Jew." Guest speaker will be Dr. Maurice Friedman who will speak on the "World of Martin Buber." Dr. Friedman spent 15 years in close contact with Martin Buber, writing The Life of Dialogue and editing The Philosophy of Martin Buber. He is the author of more than 50 journal articles and chap- ters of books on Buber. He has written a three-volume work on Buber's life and work. Dr. Friedman is a professor of religious studies, philosophy and comparative literature at San Diego State University. He has taught for more than 30 years at institutions all over the country.
