THE MAGIC NEEDLE 35125 Grand River Ave. (Drakeshire Shopping Plaza) Farmington 471-1077 B'NAI MITZVAH Sarah Poger twins bat mitzvah rites Sarah Poger will twin the ob- servance of her bat mitzvah cele- bration at 9 a.m. Saturday at Adat Shalom Synagogue with Anna , Chernobilsky, the daughter of Boris and Elena Chernobilsky of Moscow, USSR. The Chernobilskys applied to leave the Soviet Union in May 1975 and were refused the follow- ing year. Since that time, Cher- nobilsky has worked at a series of odd jobs with periods of unem- ployment in between. Mrs. Cher- nobilsky teaches Hebrew and they have organized a kindergar- ten for small children. After being denied an exit visa, Chernobilsky participated in a series of peaceful protest demon- strations. During one such demonstration in October 1976, he was arrested and sentenced to 15 days in Butyrskaya prison on alleged charges of "organizing a demonstration, striking members of the Soviet militia and hooliganism." He was arrested again on May 10, 1981, at an activist's gather- ing in Opalikha Woods, and ac- cused of beating a policeman. His trial was scheduled to take place on July 23, when he was to be charged with allegedly "resisting policeman or people's guard in conjunction with force or the threat of application of force." He faced a maximum punishment of five years imprisonment. Chernobilsky maintained that the charges against him were false. He did not appear at his trial. -- - Sarah was prepared for her bat mitzvah by her grandmother, Sophie Perper Barkman, of Flint. Mrs. Barkman taught her grand- daughter the Haftorah, the Maftir and blessings. Previously, Mrs. Barkman pre- pared her own son,- David of Bur- lington, Mass., in the same way for his bar mitzvah. A student at the United Hebrew Schools, Sarah worked for 10 months with her grandmother on her bat mitzvah preparation. Her grandmother will receive an aliyah during the ceremonies. .
