HADASSAH IS WORLD'S ONLY CENTER FOR PRENATAL TEST OF MUCOLIPIDOSIS IV Jerusalem — Hadassah is known as the only center in the world which does a prenatal test of a genetic disease known as Mucolipidosis Type IV (ML IV). It was first described by Hadas- sah doctors in 1974 and is found among Ashkenazi Jews — from Northern and Western Europe — in higher frequency than among any other group — from the Near East and the Mediterranean. Babies who suffer from ML IV are born with moderate to severe psychomotor retardations which affect their ability to walk and talk. They also develop opacity of the cornea which reduces their vision sometimes as early as two-and-a-half months of age. The oldest known survivor is in the mid-twenties. Dr. Gideon Bach, head of the Human Genetics Department of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem, is responsible for performing the complicated biochemical test on the amniotic cells of the fetus. Professor Bach comments: "Doctors and parents from all parts of the world telephone me about this prenatal test. Usually the contact is made because ML IV has occurred previously in the family, and the parents want to know whether it is safe to con- tinue with the pregancy. "We arrange for the patients to send me by express mail or by other suitable means, cultured amniotic fluid cells taken from the mother by means or am- niocentesis. Hadassah is saddened by the loss of LAURA KIRSCH who was a dedicated and de- voted member of Hadassah. She was past president of the Ein Karem Group and served on the Chapter Board in membership and fundraising. Laura and her late husband Lou, an Associate Hadassah member, gave unselfishly of their time to their many Hadassah friends and Hadas- sah Projects. Laura will remain in our memory always. The test is - divided into two parts: One is an electron micro- scope study of cell storage mate- rials, which is carried out by Dr. A. Ornoy, of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine. The other is a compli- cated biochemical test for enzyme deficiency for which I am respon- sible." Of the more than 20 families that have been tested for ML IV, five were advised to interrupt pregnancy because the fetuses were affected. One family has been tested in five different pre- gnancies: twice the pregnancies were interrupted and three times they were allowed to continue, and normal healthy children were born. In no case has the test pro- ved incorrect. Professor Bach concludes: "I remain in contact with all the families who have been tested. The test is very complicated but it is worthwhile."
