it. This harrassment didn't
last long, nor did it get
worse; it soon died down,
but our last lessons with
him, barely three years la-
ter, were terrible, though
for quite different reasons.
No doubt he still consid-
ered me a Catholic, if not
good. But it was my own
"Catholicity" that I was
beginning to doubt, the
more so after a further
heavy blow: the signing of
the Reich Concordat with
the Vatican engineered by
von Papen and Monsignor
Kaas. After the seizure of
power, the Reichstag fire,
anti the March election, it
was, incredibly, the Vati- _
can that accorded the
Nazis their first major in-
ternational recognition.
Some members of our
family — myself among
them — seriously consid-
ered leaving the church,
but that had become so
fashionable among all
those Germans who
couldn't wait to join the
Nazi Party after the March
1933 election that we
didn't, since it might have
been misconstrued as
homage to the Nazis.
Boll has other references to
church involvements, to Nazi
party demands, to a submission
for his family to acquire and dis-
play the swastika.
By that time my father,
insofar as he received any
orders at all, had almost
ceased working for
churches and monasteries;
almost all his orders were
now government ones.
And when those orders
became even scarcer, he
was urged to have at least
one member of his family
join a Nazi organization.
A kind of family council
was called, and my brother
Alois became the victim of
its decision, since, after
some miserable re-
ceivership proceedings, he
was officially the owner of
the business. He was
elected by the family to
join the Storm Troopers.
(To the end of his days he
bore a grudge against us
for this, and he was right:
we should at least have
drawn lots.) Of all the
members of our family, he
was the worst suited for
that mimicry: the person
least suited for a uniform I
have ever known, and he
suffered, he really suffered
from those mob parades
and route marches.
Perhaps this little book
alone deserves the Nobel Prize in
Literature. It is the memory of
dark days, and there is tribute in
it to a German who stands out as a
syriibol of the noblest in his
people. There is no exoneration,
there can never be exoneration, of
the guilt shared by so many —
most? — of the Germans! The good
that survives among them needs
to be respected. Here is one impor-
tant mark of respect for a noble
German.
