14 witnesses for the case."
The 750,000-member
French Jewish community has
taken an active interest in the
case. One organization, Les
Fils et Filles des Deportes
Juifs de France (The Sons and
Daughters of the Deported
Jews of France), has under-
taken a world-wide search for
the relatives of 41 children
who were allegedly arrested
by Barbie in 1944 at an or-
phanage in Izieux and de-
ported to Auschwitz. The
group has uncovered some
three dozen relatives thus far.
The French government,
Dabringhaus adds, was not
very helpful in providing him
with material for his book and,
despite the potential for huge
sales in a country that still

Lindbergh was U.S.
spy, papers suggest

San Francisco — New evidence
suggests that aviation pioneer
Charles A. Lindbergh, whose
image took a nosedive during
World War II when he was
branded as a Nazi sympathizer,
actually gathered intelligence
material for the United States on
four visits to Germany before the
war.
The new information was dis-
closed in papers published by the
Hoover Institution recently of the
late Col. Truman Smith, the
pre-war U.S. military attache in
Berlin. The documents indicate
that Lindbergh provided crucial
and detailed data on the Luftwaf-
fe's planes and Hitler's aircraft
manufacturing facilities.
As for the highly publicized in-
cident in which Nazi Field Mars-
hal Hermann Goering presented
the famed flier with a medal in
1938, the papers disclose that
neither Smith nor Lindbergh had
any advance knowledge of Goer-
ing's plan.

wraps itself in the flag of the
Resistance, French publishers
have thus far balked at issuing
Klaus Barbie.
Then too, the former Army
intelligence officer's revela-
tions have met with mixed
reactions on this side of the At-
lantic. Although many people
have expressed admiration for
the soul-searching Dabrin-
ghaus went through before de-
ciding to come out with such
sensitive, uncomplimentary
information, the retired WSU
professor reports receiving
hate mail and occasional tele-
phone calls berating him for
not keeping his mouth shut
and for bringing shame on the
U.S. government.
• The day the story broke,"
Dabringhaus admits, "there
were a lot of people in Wash-
ington shaking their heads in
embarassment." But, in a ref-
rain that most Jews will find
achingly familiar, the schol-
arly looking man with the
graying hair, who 30 years ago
wanted to exorcise the entire
Barbie episode from his life,
now feels we must set the re-
cord straight and take actions
to ensure that nothing like
this ever happens again."
