A former WSU professor thinks
the U.S. government will be in
for a rough ride when
Klaus Barbie stands trial in France

When Nazi war criminal Klaus
Barbie takes the witness stand in
France early next year, he will not be
standing trial alone. The post-World
War II actions of the United States
government and its Counter Intelli-
gence Corps (CIC) will undoubtedly be
accorded second billing alongside the
infamous "Butcher of Lyons."
The conduct of American military
officials, specifically their employ-
ment of hundreds of Nazis to serve as
intelligence liaisons in Europe as the
Cold War got under way, has become a
hotly contested public issue. And that
is due in part to the conscience and
determination of Wayne State Uni-
versity Prof. Emeritus Erhard Dab-
ringhaus. It was Dabringhaus who
spent approximatley eight months
during 1948-1949 as Barbie's control
agent while the man whom a French
military tribunal had convicted in ab-
sentia for the murders of more than
4,000 Resistance fighters was in the
employ of the U.S. government.
Dabringhaus, who served in the
Intelligence Service from 1942
through 1950, is not proud of his role in
the Barbie affair. This is why, he says,
he tried to bury the brief but intense
episode in the back of his mind after
returning to the United States in the
early 1950s. And it was a key factor in
his decision to forego a successful
