Unbiased body
on obscenity sought

New York — The National
Council of Jewish women (NCJW)
is urging the Reagan Administra-
tion and Congress to appoint
members to the proposed
Presidential Commission on Por-
nography and Obscenity who will
explore all aspects of the issue and
show concern in the safeguarding
of First Amendment rights.
"We urge that the commission
make every effort to insure that
its recommendations on pornog-
raphy and obscenity do not con-
flict with constitutional guaran-
tees of free speech and expres-
sion," the NCJW said in a state-
ment issued by the organization's
executive committee last week.

Hamburg (ZINS) — Syrian De-
fense Minister Mustafa Tlass
praised the Soviet Union last
month for its continued support of
Syria in the Middle East conflict.
Gen. Tlass was quoted in the
German magazine, Der Spiegel,
on Syria's unlimited access to
Soviet weapons and technology.
"Thank God for the Soviets," Gen.
Tlass said. "They give us every-
thing we need. There are no
strings attached." The Syrian De-
fense Minister also said that Mos-
cow had guaranteed delivery of
nuclear arms to Syria if Israel had
recourse to such arms.

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — The educa-
tional level of the Israel worker
has risen steadily during the past
decade, according to the daily
Haaretz.
The newspaper reported that
while 43 percent of the working
class had the equivalent of a sec-
ondary school education in 1973,
that figure jumped to 49 percent
by 1983. The number of workers
with university degrees increased
from nine to 13 percent during the
same period, the paper said.
