THE GROWTH OF Bagels- tein's Deli in Dallas, Texas, is one of much warmth . . . It is owned by former Detroiters Susan and Larry Goldstein . . . She is the daughter of ex-localites Marion Siedhoff and Marvin Fuller .. . Larry's parents, Adele and Herb Goldstein, still reside here. Larry was only 15 years old when a busboy at Joey's Restau- rant on Greenfield, owned by George Fink and the late Joe Cohen . . . After the army medical reserves and degree in hotel and restaurant management, he be- came manager of The Bagel Place, Toledo, Ohio in 1972 . . . It was a lucky year for him . . . Larry met Susan while at the National Res- taurant Convention in Chicago . . . She was a student at Michigan State (bachelor's in elementary education and master's in learn- ing disabilities) visiting a girlfriend . . . After four years of dating they wed in 1976. Both wanted to open and oper- ate their own business, and picked Dallas, where Larry had spent a brief army stint . . . They took over a defunct bagel factory .. . and after eight weeks of repair, refurbishing and repainting, opened for business Sept. 7, 1976 . . . at 8104 Spring Valley, just east of Colt Road in the North- wood Shopping Center (214-234- 3787). For want of a name, Larry and Susan took the combination of bagel and their own last name .. . coming up with "Bagelstein's." At first, they sold only bagels, but month later, Larry and Susan came out with full line of deli items, plus doing catering also .. . In 1979 they closed everything a week for remodeling to accommo- date their new bakery . . . dou- bling the size and offering baked goods from challah and rugalach to pastries and cakes. Another major change has been made at Bagelstein's . . . When first opened, there were 123 seats, but self-serve on paper plates .. . August of this year, Larry and Susan completed their full- service expansion . . . taking over a vacant paint store . . . put in 154 seating . . . and turned it into a full-fledged Jewish delicatessen- restaurant . . . where customers could be seated . . . while people waited on them. No more paper plates or plastic silverware . . . Bagelstein's has arrived! OUTER DRIVE ends tomor- row night at Yesterday's Classic Oldies Club of Sheraton- Southfield Hotel, W. Nine Mile . . . followed this Tuesday by Air Command, five piece, all male, high energy '60s group. IT WAS ALL farm land on Greenfield, north of Ten Mile Rd. . . . when Tom and Lydia Hong opened_ their Oriental City Res- taurant . . . That was 22 years ago . . . Oct. 16, 1962 . . . date shop- ping center was opened. Today, they still quietly go about their business of preparing good Oriental food for a lot of faithfuls and newcomers . . . from generation to generation ... Oriental City uses no lard . . . all its dishes are made with pure veg- etable oil. MARC FABER, 11 years old, is one of the performers in magic show being given by Tel-12 Mys- tics Nov. 17-18 at the mall on Telegraph and 12 Mile . . .
