Reagan backed . . .
As a Jew, as a Zionist, and as an
American citizen, I was both ap-
palled and dismayed at the bla-
tant anti-Reagan rhetoric and
sentiment in articles such as that
entitled "Reverend Reagan"
which appeared on Page 4 of the
Sept. 7 issue of The Jewish News.
President Reagan is, indeed, a
great friend of Israel and the
Jewish people, and his contribu-
tions to both of the above are most
invaluable ones.
The United States, under the
Reagan Administration, has
made the many, much needed mil-
lions of dollars in financial aid
grants and has supplied the Is-
raeli army with many of the
fighter planes, weapons and com-
bat equipment which is, and has
been, conducive to Israel's survi-
val as a Jewish state in the hostile
Middle East, encompassed by the
barbaric Arabic nations.
President Reagan has sup-
Ir e ported Israel throughout his first
term in office and, if re-elected, it
is evident that he will continue to
stand up to such evil establish-
ments as the U.N., whenever they
choose to condemn Israel or relin-
> quish its membership. It was the
President who clearly stated, "If
Israel leaves, the United States
leaves with it."
As far as President Reagan's
position on prayer in the public
schools is concerned, the clamor
over this issue is altogether mis-
placed. There is no reason what-
soever for American Jews to feel
threatened by the suggestion that
students should have the "right to
engage in voluntary prayer in the
schools," which is all the Republi-
can platform says on this subject.
It is utter nonsense that volun-
tary prayer signifies a plot by
President Reagan and Christian
fundamentalists to destroy the
separation between church and
state and "Christianize" America.
Prayer in the schools is a matter
that will, in the last analysis, be
decided by Congress and the Sup-
reme Court. The "moment of si-
lence" proposed by President Re-
