problem was dependence upon the
power of others, which swung be-
tween benevolence and malevo-
lence. Consistent with his
theological and political posi-
tions, he became the first major
theologian to reject Christian
missions to the Jews.
By 1948, when the World Coun-
cil of Churches was founded,
Niebuhr's influence on the post-
war scene was acknowledged in
America as well as in ecumenical
circles. Many of the new leaders in
political science and in Washing-
ton were quoting his writings, and
many of his former opponents in
the major American Protestant
churches were admitting his con-
tribution.
Prof. Ursula Niebuhr, his wife
and partner, toward the end re-
tired from her post at Barnard
College to give him extra help.
Since his death she has edited
books of his. sermons and occa-
sional articles, and also counseled
a growing number of students and
biographers writing on his
thought and contribution to reli-
gion and politics.
From the time of widespread
church support for the Nazis, he
was vocal in condemning any
blending of religion and reactio-
nary politics. From the time when
lie confronted the anti-Semitism
of Henry Ford and Father
Coughlin in the Detroit area, he
was strong in articulating the
Christian responsibility to fight
the teaching of contempt.
In 1970, I founded Christians
Concerned for Israel, an organiza-
tion that provided the base for
what is now a federation of groups
— the National Christian Leader-
ship Conference for Israel. Over a
period of months in 1968 and 1969
I wrote 764 personal letters to
churchmen who I thought should
be aroused by the the "thunderous
silence of the American churches"
during the Arab League's
threatened "second Holocaust"
(the 1967 attack on Israel).
There were some negative re-
sponses and some churchmen who
cited the need for neutrality and
"even-handedness" at that time.
In any case, 230 friends responded
and became sponsors of CCI.
To me at that time, and today, it
was startling — and then
encouraging and logical — how
many were former students of
Reinhold Niebuhr. When the con-
version comes to American Pro-
testantism, as it has already come
significantly in West Germany
and the Netherlands, it will be in
no small degree due to
Niebuhr and those he
educated.
He understood the import St
of the war against the Jews
before most Americans. He uN..,
derstood and criticized the Chris-
tian complicity in the temporary
successes of Mussolini, Franco
and Hitler. He opposed Christian
missionizing of Jews. He fought
anti-Semitism and supported Is-
rael.
Forty years later, we can see
that he was 40 years ahead of
most of the churches.
