"Texas Tenders" . . . In 1657, the
first English Chocolate House
was opened at Queen's Head,
Bishopgate . . . Guests supplied
their own silver mugs to sip choco-
late . . . In 1736, King Charles VI
of Hungary, fearing he might
some day lose his job, purchased
70 taverns throughout the coun-
try.
The idea of a restaurant in
which the diner selects his or her
own plate of food and carries it to a
table originated in New York City
in 1885. . . . The cafeteria system
now flourishes in many different
forms in most cities of the United
States, though it has never
achieved much importance in any
other country . . . In 85 B.C.E., the
fashion for elaborate dining ta-
bles hit Rome . . . Families paid
more for tables than for all other
furniture in their houses . . . In
1650, Persian nobles enjoyed a
new fad in dining tables made of
polished elephant tusks imported
from India . . . They were each
worth about $25,000.
In 17th Century Greece, only
brazen women ate in the presence
of men . . . An unmarried woman's
reputation was ruined if a young
man saw her at a dining table .. .
In 1710, King Frederic IV of De-
nmark appointed a Keeper of
Napkins to keep an eye on his 400
cloth-of-gold chin wipers.
