BY AVI FEINGLASS Students at ORT schools throughout the Jewish world are being educated in the increasingly complex and sophisticated technologies of the future, within the framework of a Jewish traditional environment, according to Alvin L. Gray, president of th American ORT (the Organization of Rehabilita- tion through Training) Fed- eration. "At ORT schools students acquire top-flight training in the high technology fields of the future and an appre- ciation of the priceless Jewish heritage of the past. These two emphases com- pliment one another and ORT's commitment to both quality technical training and to Jewish identity is firm and unshakable." ORT was founded in 1880 in Czarist Russia to train the poor Jews of Eastern Europe in the marketable skills of the time, skills such as carpentry and sewing. Today, the 800 schools and training centers in ORT's global network serve some 115,000 students in 21 countries, 78,000 in Israel alone, in fields such as com- puters, robotics and av- ionics. The computer has come to be recognized as the basic tool of hi-tech training. Computer studies and other sophisticated technologies have been incorporated into the ORT global network at schools throughout the Jewish world, including FREE ESTIMATES \ 355.2742 DELET RESIDENTIAL • COMMERCIAL Clark Family Players 51—MISCELLANEOUS BIRTHDAY PARTIES and other special oc- casions Clowns, juggling, magic, music, dance, puppets, balloon sculpture JEWISH BRAIN 4://it. er5,00 q u * Over qu estions * GARAGE DOOR SERVICE pier electric C w"Pa4Y Call Mary Ellen 273-6716 r ,111"1"..."...11 1 •111.milel1/4 1 SPACE AGE 53—ENTERTAINMENT CARICATURES,,, CART0ON5 BY OF GREATER DETROIT Free Estimates Adult Game- 529.95 (U.S. Funds) Children's Game-5 26.95 2400 questions (U.S. Funds) Prices include postage Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back Send orders to M.D G. A prime example of the ORT approach which em- phasizes both high technol- ogy training and Jewish education is the Max A. Braude ORT International School. The school will be situated in the Israeli de- velopment town of Carmiel in the Western Galilee, the center of Israel's new high technology area called Region 2000. The Carmiel municipality is providing land for the construction of the school and for dor- mitories that will house high school students not only from Israel but from Jewish communities all over the world. Students will study to- gether with their Israeali counterparts, concentrating on advanced subjects such as computer sciences, com- puter aided design, robotics, electronics, electro-optics and biochemistry. Con- struction is due to begin in the spring of 1985. Instruction at the ORT Braude School will be car- ried on in four languages: Hebrew, English, French and Spanish. It is expected that high school students from the United States will make up a significant por- tion of the student body once the school opens its doors in the fall of 1986. • A Seven Arts Feature 53—ENTERTAINMENT VERSATILE sophisticated party music. Growth in the territories Jerusalem (ZINS) — In 1967, when the Israeli armed forces liberated the areas west of the Jordan River, the population of the area numbered 585,000 Arabs. Now the Arab popu- lation has grown to 750,000. In 1968, the annual per capita income of the area was $170. In 1982, the an- nual per capita income had risen to $1,390. In 1970 there were only 1,300 private automobiles registered in the entire West Bank. By 1983, that number had increased to 18,800. In 1967 only five percent of the inhabitants possessed electric re- frigerators. By 1982 that figure had risen to 52 per- cent. In 1968, the Gross Na- tional Product of the ter- ritories was $38 million. By 1982 it was $400 million. In an editorial comment on these statistics, the after- noon Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot pointed out that more than half of the Arab population in Judea and Samaria are less than 15 years old.
