B'nai B'rith Foundation to have
Great American Traditions dinner

Nathan D. Rubenstein, chair-
man of the Detroit B'nai B'rith
Foundation Committee, an-
nounces that the B'nai B'rith In-
ternational Great American Tra-
ditions Award Dinner will be held
at the Westin Hotel on Dec. 5.
This year the Great American
Traditions Award will be given to
two corporate leaders in the met-
ropolitan Detroit community:
Bernard M. Fauber, chairman of
the board and chief executive offi-
cer of the K-mart Corp., and
David Handleman, chairman of
the board and chief executive offi-
cer of the Handleman Co.

Abraham J. Bayer, interna-
tional commission director for the
National Jewish Community Re-
lations Advisory Council, will
speak on "The Plight of Soviet
Jewry 1984" at the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Metropolitan
Detroit's Delegate Assembly on
Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Temple
Emanu-El.
Having traveled to the Soviet
Union several times to meet with
refusenik leaders and with the
families of prisoners of conscience
in Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad and
Vilnius, Bayer served as the na-
tional coordinator of the Ameri-
can Jewish Conference on Soviet
Jewry from 1968 to 1971.
One of the United States or-
ganizers of the First and Second
World Conferences on Soviet
Jewry held in Brussels in 1971,
Bayer served similarly for the
Third International Converence
held in 1983 in Jerusalem.
As senior staff person of
NJCRAC, Bayer has met with
local Jewish and non-Jewish
leadership in over 90 com-
munities throughout the United
States to advise on international
concerns.
The assembly is open to the
community.

the general dinner chairman.
Dietary laws will be observed,
with the cocktail reception begin-
ning at 6 p.m. Following the
dinner and presentation of the

Handleman, the program will fea-
ture concert and recording artist

The B'nai B'rith Youth Serving
Agencies, which are the B'nai

college campuses will be the reci-
pients of the proceeds raised from
the dinner.

A focus group on living with
cancer meeting will be held on
Monday, 7:30 p.m. in the South-
field Civic Center, Room III. As of
November, Focus on Living meet-
ings will be held the first Monday
of each month, instead of the first
Wednesday.
Cancer patients and family
members are welcome. The pur-
pose of this self-help group is to
bring together patients and fam-
ily members who have questions
or are experiencing problems as a
result of living with cancer.
