NEWS Herzog visits Bahais Tel Aviv (JTA) — President Chaim Herzog paid an official visit to the Bahai Temple and ad- ministrative headquarters of the Bahai faith in Haifa, expressing his solidarity with the members of that faith persecuted in Iran. In the early decades of activities of the Detroit District of the Zionist Organization of America, his associates recall his top role in behalf of both the fund-raising functions-of the Keren Hayesod as well as the membership enrollments in which he was an organizing leader. In support of these efforts, he became known as the singing Zionist who applied musical scores to the ideological appeals for the movement. At the same time, he gave much of his other spare time to member- ship enrollment in the United Hebrew Schools and was among the most dedicated advocates of priorities for Jewish educational efforts. In support of these causes, he joined with leading Zionists, in the 1930s and 1940s, in sponsor- ing home singing groups, all with the aim of advancing the Zionist cause and Hebrew education. Born in Austria, Cantor Sonenklar began studying canto- rial music in Tarnopol, Poland, at age 8. He studied voice and music at the Vienna Conservatory. Cantor Sonenklar came to Chicago in 1922 and served as cantor for Cong. Anshe Emeth until 1932. He came to Cong. Shaarey Zedek in 1932 and served until 1969, when he was named cantor emeritus.
