Silver anniversary for synagogue Livonia Jewish Congregation will have a "Chai" dinner in cele- bration of its silver anniversary at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the synagogue. Founded in 1958, the congrega- tion held its first High Holiday services at the Botsford Inn. The congregation was officially or- ganized in 1959, when officers and directors were elected. First meet- ing in a farmhouse on Seven Mile Road, the congregation moved to a building on Six Mile Road and fi- nally to its current site in the Maly and Samuel Cohn Building on Seven Mile Road. Congregants come from all over western Wayne County and from parts of Oakland County. The congregation has a Sunday school for children in kindergarten through confirmation age. Rabbi Martin Gordon, who has been the spiritual leader for 18 years, di- rects bar and bat mitzvah instruc- tion. The ladies auxiliary, which meets the second Monday of the month at the synagogue, prepares kiddushes. Services are held at 8 p.m. Fri- days and 9 a.m. Saturdays. Adult study classes are conducted by Rabbi Gordon. Nathan Fine is the principal of the Sunday school, and Sharon . Bernstein is the administrator. The board of directors includes: Leonard Goldzweig, chairman; Sarah Smith, assistant chairman; Joyce Gural, treasurer; Phyllis Joyce Scherman, recording secre- tary; Molly Marco, corresponding secretary; Nathan Weiser, ad- ministrator; and Helen Bayles, ex-officio.
