Bezalel Gordon Jerusalem, Israel A mission for Rabbi Riemer This is a response to Rabbi Jack Riemer's open letter published on Erev Yom Kippur (Oct. 5). Dear Rabbi Riemer, You have reached me! Yes, I used to belong to a synagogue, but I no longer do, not because my children grew up, but because of tyranny and arrogance of the con- gregation. We in the majority have not turned away. We have been turned away by: poor Jewish education,. poor communication, lack of interest in our culture, the 28585 Telegraph Rd. Across From. Schlussel of Southfield has been elected president of the Jewish Education Service of North America, Inc. (JESNA). Buick Honda tyranny of the "building fund" and an older, more observant gen- • eration closed _to new ideas and manner of worship. I do not deny the virtues of prayer and the sense of history in the siddurim and the synagogues, but I do deplore the lack of inter- est in how we think and what we prefer. I also resent the rejection of our need to participate in deci- sions about all aspects of Jewish synagogue life. "Baby boomers" are the majority now, they have been reared in an open, participa- tive culture, they seek the same in their synagogue affiliation. Are they getting it? No. Rabbi Riemer, do not look to us the dropouts, but turn your eyes to the "in-group" and when you lo- cate what they are doing to keep us out, you may find the way to get us to belong again. Schlussel, who previously served as a member of JESNA's board of directors, has long been active in both local and national Jewish communal life as well as in civic affairs. In the Jewish Wel- fare Federation of Detroit he is a member of the board of governors and of the executive committee, as well as chairman of the Confer- ence of Division Chairmen. A board member and past president of both the Jewish Fed- eration Apartments and Jewish National Fund of Detroit, he is also past president of Cong. Shomrey Emunah of Southfield. His other activities include: serving on the board of trustees, executive committee and as chairman of the human resources committee of Sinai Hospital of De- troit. He is also a member and trustee of the Stanley Imerman Memorial Foundation and of the Theodore and Mina Bargman Foundation.
