"Justice" for
Jewish terrorists
On Oct. 12, I read in your news-
paper one of the most misleading
letters to an editor it has ever
been my misfortune to come
across. A Mr. Borac, of some com-
mittee for "justice" for Jewish
settlers, comes to the impassioned
defense of Yehuda Richter, facing
sentencing for an alleged "re-
taliatory" act.
Mr. Borac conjures up the
image of a "brave" Richter in hot
pursuit of Arab terrorists, or at
the very least, committing a de-
served act of vengeance against
some Arabs who had perpetrated
a dastardly crime. Such is far from
the case: Richter was convicted of
ambushing a bus transporting
unarmed Arab workers from their
place of employment; he sprayed
the vehicle with automatic fire,
wounding eight innocent people.
Richter did not seek to deter or
"preempt" Arab terrorism by this
cowardly act; rather, as a member
of Meir Kahane's Kach party, he
believes in shooting Arabs be-
cause they are Arabs (a familiar
sort of anti-Semitism, no?), and in
attacking Arabs so they will be
intimidated into emigrating from
Israel. Far from preventing future
acts of Arab terrorism, Richter's
folly is more likely to push the
children of his victims into the
ranks of Israel's most deadly ter-
rorist enemies.
Similar logic applies to the
other actions taken by the re-
cently discovered Jewish terrorist
ring of which Borac is so
enamored. These vigilantes did
not surprise Arab terror cells as
they prepared to attack Jews;
rather these "good boys" shot at
random into schoolyards, placed
deadly explosives on public buses
and planted booby-trapped gre-
nades in holy houses of worship.
By their reprehensible be-
havior, they bring Israel down to
the barbaric level of their PLO
counterparts. These people would
have Israel lose the right to point
righteously at Yassir Arafat and -
condemn him as a child-
murderer, without the world
being able to respond, "So what?
You're no better, you do the same
thing."
For Israel's sake, Richter
should be given the maximum
prison sentence — and, if he is
still an American citizen, sum-
marily deported to the U.S. He
and the rest of Kahane's thugs are
one U.S. import the Jewish state
can do without.
Finally, a comment on the
organization Mr. Borac purports
to represent: Firstly, most of the
Jewish settlers do not need the
kind of justice Mr. Borac is peddl-
ing, because they are decent,
law-abiding citizens. Secondly,
Mr. Borac stood for justice, he
would stand for equal trials and

WATCHES & CLOCKS
1991 COOLIDGE-BERKLEY
Your Oct. 19 article about the
48th District Court race was of
great interest but also caused con-
cern. I find this letter difficult be-
cause it will probably conflict
with the thoughts of many of my
friends and colleagues. Yet I am
not completely comfortable with
the article.
As a resident of the 48th Judi-
- cial District and an attorney who
has practiced in Oakland County
for about 30 years, I have commit-
ted myself to support Ed Sosnick
for district judge. My support is
based on the fact that I have had
legal matters with Ed as well as
the overwhelming preference my
colleagues in the Oakland County
Bar Association have shown for
him. On that basis I feel that he
would be a better district judge
than his opponent.
Despite having practiced for
such a long time in the county and
having served as president of the
Oakland County Bar Association
and as a commissioner of the State
Bar of Michigan for Oakland
County, I have never had the oc-
casion to have any dealngs with
Mr. Sosnick's opponent and can-
' not evaluate his legal ability or
determine if he has a judicial
temperament.
That is the precise point of this
letter. My endorsement of Ed Sos-
nick is based on fact, not emotion.
There are a number of Biblical in-
junctions which help us to some.
extent in determining whether a
person would make a good judge,
the best of which is probably
Micah's injunction to do justice,
love mercy and walk humbly with
God. Unless Mr. Ajlouny's organ-
izational affiliations affect his
ability to be a good judge, they are
immaterial. If one believes that
Mr. Ajlouny would treat Jewish
litigants and lawyers fairly, then
his views about the Middle East
ought not to be considered.
Arab-Americans should ask the
same question about Ed Sosnick. I
am convinced he would treat them
fairly and therefore his views con-
cerning Israel are not germane.
Ed's comment in the last line or
two of your article where he says
that he is running for 48th Dis-
trict Court judge and not in the
Middle East is correct. I am sure
that your readers will look at the
qualifications of each of the can-
-- didates for district judge and
make their decision solely on that
basis rather than the candidate's
religion or ethnicity. That is
something we, as Jews, have al-
ways asked of the electorate.
