David C. Gross

Nathan Ausubel has an estab-
lished record of great creativity in
modern Jewish literature, and the
new _edition of his Pictorial His-
tory of the Jewish People (Crown
Publishers) marks a continuity of
interest in the vast library bear-
ing his bylines.
The new edition of the Pictorial
History is updated by David C.
Gross, adding immense value to a
very important work.
Ausubel's collected works in-
clude the historical and the
legendary, humor and poetry. He
gained recognition as a translator
of German classics and contrib-
uted toward popularizing the
works of Jakob Wasserman. His
anthologies of Jewish humor,
legends and poems have gained
wide recognition.
David Gross' addenda to the
original Ausubel volume serves
as an enrichment of Jewish liter-
ary values for this generation.
Former executive vice president
of the Jewish Publication Society
of America, Gross presently oc-
cupies a leading journalistic post
as editor of the Jewish Week of
New York. Author of seven prev-
iously published books on Jewish
subjects, among his notable con-
tribution to the Jewish bookshelf
is Jewish People's Almanac. For
some 30 years he has had impor-
tant roles as commentator, in
newspaper columns and books, on
matters relating to Jewish ex-
perience.
The values inherent in Pictorial
History of the Jewish People can
not be fully measured. The book,
its hundreds of illustrations, the
totality of covering the entire his-
tory of the Jewish people, now up-
dated, is admirable.
Supplementing an historical
account of the ancient period, fol-
lowed by all events in the entire
life of Jewry, is a timely evalua-
tion of the oft-debated question:
Who Are the Jews? That and in
relationship to Israel and the
emerged Jewish State are
thoroughly covered by the
authoritative authors.
The medieval and modern
periods are under full review,
leading up to the most timely
events and issues as well as the
current status of world Jewry.
It is in the chapter entitled "The
Last 30 Years" that the latest de-
mographic aspects as well as the
ideologies posed by Israel are pro-
vided the desired coverage for a
full appreciation of history
thoroughly evaluated.
Especially informative in the
