He is currently investigating the work being done to help the Jewish children there, some of whom were kidnapped and have not yet been found. The newest WSU Hillel em- ployee has also been contacting Jewish students who are not familiar with Hillel's services on campus, finding out what types of programming they would like to see at Hillel. Initial responses, he said, have included requests that the lounge remain open some evenings for WSU's part-time students and organizing events that will enable unaffiliated stu- dents to celebrate the Jewish holidays together. In planning these programs, Oppenheimer draws from his past experiences, using them as guidelines. "My own experiences both as an undergraduate and graduate student have convinced me of the importance of having _some contact with the Jewish community, without having to identify with any particular reli- gious or political group," he said While in Israel in 1979, he worked at Hebrew University in Jerusalem with Jewish commu- nity work students from Europe and also spent six months on Kib- butz Yovata near Eilat, working in the children's house. "I found that the children raised in this environment related well • to one another and to their par- ents. The adults were able to con- centrate wholly on their relation- ships with the children, without having to worry about the chil- dren's material needs. These were taken care of by the kibbutz it- self," the psychologist said. Oppenheimer has expressed a great interest in working with WSU students and he is looking forward to making the job of out- reach worker a successful one. "At the end of the year," he said, "I'd like to look back on my work with Hillel and feel that we've been able to create opportunities for a number of Jewish students to really look at what it means to be Jewish from a deeper perspec- tive." „„„;:;;;;;;;;;;:•;:4,.....::•.;*.;•;;;;::: aegg.
