Javitz living
with disease

1 Three years ago, Jacob K.
ijavitz, the Repubican United
States Senator from New York,
wt s running for re-election and
was speaking before the media of
New York.
"The doctors say I have a motor
, neuron disease but they say I can
run for office and I can serve my
six years," Senator Javitz said. He
had Lou Gehrig's Disease.
javitz lost the Republican pri-
!nary and, running on the Liberal
Party ticket in November, lost the
general election, ending a 34-year
career in public service. His con-
s'..,ituents seemed to fear that his
disease would not allow him to
complete his term of office.
1 According to a recent report in
;) arade Magazine, today, at 79,
Javitz is all but paralyzed. His
arms are supported by braces and
his head slumps forward. A
wheelchair holds his frail body
1 and a special respirator keeps him
15 eathing. But he maintains that
1 *gone of this would have kept him
from being an effective U.S. Sena-
tor and possibly chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations Com-
mittee.
"The disease has one blessing,
-for which I am eternally grateful,"
he says. "It doesn't affect your
,lead. If I was ever sharp, I am just
as sharp today. I have all my mar-
bles."
There is no cure yet for his ill-
ness, medically known as amyot-
brophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),
which involves a progressive de-
generation of motor cells in the
sz.)inal chord and the brain. Intel-
lect, however, is unimpaired.
The motor nerves no longer
electrically stimulate the muscles
and the muscles weaken. Espe-
-ially affected are the arms and
-legs, speech, swallowing - and
breathing.
"There is a lot to learn about
how to live withthis disease, how
to get out of bed, get into bed, go to
the bathroom, live a life," Javits
says, pointing around his room to
z- the respirator and the nurse. "I
often feel like I could just get up
.7, nd walk away, but I can't."
Still, Javitz maintains an
active schedule, regularly visit-
ing his office in Washington.
