LOOKING FOR A •
SPECIAL PLACE

Katherine Terrell as Valencienne
and James Schwisow as her
hopeless lover.

Beautiful settings, some Hol-
iywood hype and British pop
singer Cleo Laine made for .a
Smash opening for the Michigan
Opera Theater's 1984-1985 sea-
son last week.
A fine cast created. the
warmly-received mix for The
Merry Widow, which continues
through this weekend at the
Music Hall Center.
Miss Laine was ably supported
by Ron Raines as Count Danilo,
Katherine Terrell as the not-
quite-proper Ambassador's wife,
Valencienne, and James
Szhwisow as Valencienne's hope-
less admirer. Their able singing
_and witty lines provided a most
I, enjoyable evening.
- The merry • widow is chased by
every eligible Frenchman be-
, cause of her great wealth, but the
bankrupt country of Pontevedria
is hoping for a match with a na-
-tive son to keep her fabulous
/wealth at home. The farce is
appropriately stirred by Ambas-
sador Zeta, ably played by David
Rae Smith. Woody Romoff, as aide
de camp Niegos, nearly steals the
- show.
A large supporting cast, beauti-
Ail costumes and an excellent or-
chestra conducted by Miss Laine's
, liusband, John Dankworth, added
immensely to the evening.
