Happy 35th Birthday
JEFF ROSENBAUM

Love,
Liz and Hallie

I
learth, no organization or move-
illYnt, has the right to deprive any
human being of the dignity and
he holiness that inheres in him.
Secondly, the sages declare that
tne creation of Adam and Eve
convey the truth that each human
being is unique. Each of us is
God's unrepeatable experiment,
His unduplicated creative event.
The sages present a vivid parable:
I 'A mortal king wishes to make
irj any coins, and so he creates one
mold, and with it he stamps out all
the coins that he needs, and each
is a replica of every other. But the
.AL1-.nighty created all men but
from one, and yet no two indi-
:iduals are exactly alike, every
human being is unique." Our dif-
frence and uniqueness is part of
that Divine gift which resides in
; every person.
Third, the human race began
with a single individual for the
ake of peace among all men, so
hat no man might say "My ances-
Vr is greater than yours."
"The sages taught that there are
no superior or inferior races, that
we are all equal in the sight of
Gad, that every person has the
rights to life, liberty, and the
njoyment of God's world. .
Trace back any blessing to its
ource, examine the history of any ,
great movement or institution,
and you will discover it began
with one person who believed that
he could make a difference. That
pErson was only one but he was
not less than one and would not
ermit his human limitation to
revent the expression of his un-
limited potential.
We need this truth so desper-
ately in our collective Jewish life.
We have heard many prophets of
d, :om in recent years predicting
the decline, if not the demise of
:'N..merican Jewry. The evidence
today is that Judaism is very
'such alive. Collectively, we have
affirmed that "we shall not die,
but we shall live." But it is our .
task as Jews to translate this
life-affirmation as a people into
individual acts of commitment
and devotion. As parents, we can
x profoundly influence the Jewish
character of those whose lives de-
pend upon us. As students we can
find more effectively and clearly
the path of understanding that
leads from the ancient tradition to
I our own lives. As citizens of a
great democracy, we can recog-
-lize that each of us is invested
with great responsibilities and
charged with great duties.
As we rediscover the Torah's
answer to the question of "What is
Man," we shall be enabled to face
lour future with faith, wisdom and
courage.
