Proposed expansion
of EEC has Israel
wary on exports

Brussels (JTA) — Israel is mak-
ing clear to its European trading_
partners the serious concern it
has for its agricultural exports
once Spain and Portugal become
members of the European Eco-
nomic Community (EEC) in
January 1986.
A delegation representing
Hamerkaz Hakhaklat, the cen-
tral organization of agricultural
cooperatives in Israel, had a series
of meetings in Brussels last week
with representatives of Belgian
an European agricultural inter-
ests.
Simha Assaf, who headed the
Israeli group, stressed that we
are not asking for preferential
treatment, but we want the Euro-
pean authorities to take our situa-
tion into account on a basis of re-
ciprocity and equality."
Spain is due to enter the EEC
Jan. 1, 1986, but the date is prob-
lematic because negotiations are
presently deadlocked.

Parliamentary group
nixes anti-Zionist
resolution at parley

New York (JTA) — The
secretary-general of the Inter
Parliamentary Union, Pio-Carlo
Terenzio, has privately written
the president of the World Jewish
Congress, Edgar M. Bronfman,
informing him that in place of a
proposed Kuwaiti resolution:;:
equating Zionism with racism,
the Union adopted an alternative
resolution without anti-Zionist
references at its conference which
ended in Geneva earlier this
month.
In his letter received here last
week, Terenzio refered to the
"numerous cables and letters
from Jewish associations from all
over the world" urging defeat of ,
the Kuwaiti proposal, and he
asked the WJC president to in-
form the Jewish organizations of
the decisions taken at the confer-. - 1
ence. The resolution ultimately
adopted condemns South Africa's
racial policies but makes no refer-
ence to Israel.
