observance of God's holy Shab-
bath.
"Throughout two thousand
years of separation from its land
and dispersion among the gen-
tiles, the Jewish people has re
mained steadfast to the eternal
truths expressed in God's Torah,
handed down by Moses on Mount
Sinai, and has not forgotten the
- precious gift it enshrines, Shab-
bath. It is the Shabbath which has
preserved the unity of the Jewish
people by imparting sanctity to
the Jew and making him stand
out from the profanity of the sur-
) rounding world. 'Why is that
man's shop closed?' Because he
observes the Shabbath.' Why
isn't that man at work?' Because
he observes the Shabbath.'
(Mechilta to Exodus 31:14).
"The Torah established the
-identity of the Jewish people.
Through the Torah the individual
- Jew realizes that he is but one of
many organs making up a whole
body, a body which he is enjoined
to preserve intact, through thick
and thin.
"As long ago as the days of Is-
> rael's enslavement in Egypt, our
greatest leader, Moses, realized
‘7;
that the Jews would be unable to
survive as a nation unless they
were welded together by a
superior force which singled them
out from their Egyptian
neighbors. The Midrash relates
how, to prevent them from as-
similating with the Egyptians, he
requested Pharaoh to grant them
a weekly day of rest, on the pre-
text that this was in Pharaoh's
own interest, since otherwise his
slaves would die of overwork
(Midrash Rabba Exodus 1).
"In this manner, the Jews were
impressed with the knowledge
that they were a distinct people, a
people that lived in the hope of the
promised redemption. For six
days they toiled as slaves; on the
seventh, they delighted — by way
of utter contrast — in the study of
scrolls which they had in their
possession, secure in the convic-
tion that the Almighty would re-
scue them, thanks to the fact that
they rested on Shabbath (Midrash
Rabba Exodus 5)."
It is in this spirit that this im-
portant work will surely be wel-
_ corned in Jewish ranks.
