Jerusalem — Because of the
country's fascinating geograph-
ical and human landscape, its his-
tory and its political, interna-
tional and religious tensions, Is-
rael is providing a rich source of
plot for Hollywood thrillers. An
ever-increasing number of these
movies are being filmed far from
the Hollywood sound sets, as pro-
ducers are discovering the bene-
fits of filming on location in Israel
itself.
Cannon Film's The Ambas-
sador, a joint venture with the
Jerusalem-based G.G. Israel
Studios is one example. While it is
not the first movie to be filmed in
Israel, it is the first time that, ex-
cepting the director and five stars,
the entire crew is Israeli.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson
and starring Robert Mitchum,
Rock Hudson, Ellen Burstyn,
Fabio Testi and Donald Plea-
sance, this action-packed thriller
is set for release later this year. It
is based_ on the novel Fifty-Two
Pick-Up, by Elmore Leonard.
The plot revolves around at-

chief (Rock Hudson), to negotiate

LEST THEY FORGET , MR. PRESIDENT,
OUR HOLOCAUST

BY MAURICE CROLL, M.D.

Do not forget us,
My dear, beloved
President.
Do not abandon us.
For we have labored,
Long and hard,
In all four corners
Of the earth (Diaspora)
To retain and cherish
In our hearts
Our biblical Hebrew
Beliefs,
Of the one and only
God,
And we have shared it
With all the peoples.
Still, it dwells
Rampant in our hearts
Growing stronger
As the world continues
To inflict
Its consummate hatred
Against us — the Children
Of Israel — the Jews.

Our most precious lady,
With the beacon lamp
Of freedom,
s beginning to crumble
From within.
Her heart is also hurting.
There is hatred living
And flourishing
Within our beloved land.
There is fear, prowling
Voraciously,
Across this great land
Of freedom.
The ugly, shameful head
Of full-fledged bigotry
Can be heard
Storming out into
The air-waves,
And people are applauding.

Will the shining beacon
Of freedom
Be thusly extinguished
As our Lady of Freedom
Crumbles into oblivion?

My heart aches deeply
For this, my beloved country.
Will they steal from us
The last true bastion
Of freedom?

Men of high degree,
Of the sacred cloth,
Now preach hatred
In their church,
One against the other.
A Holy Crusade of their
Own, and only way,
To righteousness—
To the one and only path
To their God.

Almost every country
In the world
Is stained, deeply,
With Jewish blood.
This little sliver of
True democracy — Israel —
Is drenched with the
Blood of their history
Saturating every square
Inch.
Why is the Rose of Sharon
So blood stained?
Why is the pure, white
Lily of the Valley
Tinged all over with red?
Even the flowers of Israel
Cannot breathe and grow
Unmolested in Israel.
Surrounded on all sides,
In depth,
By age-old, sworn
Enemies
With drawn swords,
Openly declaring the
Complete and absolute
Destruction of Israel.

Will the heinous head
Of another Holocaust

be allowed to flourish
And defile
Our land of hard-fought
Freedom?

Has not the price already
Been paid in full?

There are strong murmurings
In this land
Of low-born, bigoted,
Destructive forces, ready
To rise again.

Let us begin anew, to
Rebuild and revitalize
Our beloved Lady With the Lamp.
Let us renew our pledge
To give her a full measure
Of freedom and liberty,
Of human understanding
Of freedom for all,
So that her light may shine
Across the seas
To destroy the
Malignant seeds
Of those oncoming clouds
Of hate
That seek entry into our
Haven of freedom.

Let the world know,
Once again,
That our Statue of Liberty's
Quest for eternal freedom
Is alive and well
And cannot be destroyed.

For this, we unite as one.
For this, we pray!

ADDENDUM: In this season of our High
Holy Days, we pray for the
Lord to write your name in
the Book of Life, along with
your beloved Nancy, our
First Lady. We hope,
further, to renew this
pledge year after year, so
long as we are free to do so.

leader (Fabio Testi) makes far
more excitement.
Both Robert Mitchum ariC,.
Donald Pleasance have family
connections in Israel. Pleasance is
married to an Israeli, and his in-
laws still live in the country.
Mitchum's sister, a Bahai, had
moved to Israel three years ago,
and he hadn't seen her since. The
studio found her through the
Bahai center in Haifa, and staged
a surprise reunion between the-
siblings on Army radio.
Israel was full of surprises for
all the actors, who tried to take
time out in between their shoot-
ing schedule to see something Df
the country. Ellen Burstyn, on her
second trip here in two years,
rived in Israel a week earlier, and
was hosted by Jerusalem maya-
Teddy Kollek.
Rock Hudson was somewhat
disappointed in Tel Aviv, but
Jerusalem was "magic" for him,
and he enjoyed a jaunt into the j
desert. The Ambassador is 111:_a- -
son's first movie since undergoing
open-heart surgery. His doctor's
prescription includes miles of
walking daily, and so he has
enjoyed his hikes on the Israeli_'
beach and the old city of
Jerusalem. Hudson, whos-
"McMillan and Wife" television
series was popular in Israel, wcs
made an honorary member of the
Jerusalem police force.
Robert Mitchum has become
well-known to the Israeli pubic;
as well, as the mini-series "Winds
of War" appeared on Israeli tele
vision during his stay here.
The Ambassador has given fiVe
Hollywood stars a chance not only
to portray Israel, but to see first-
hand what the country is really
like.
