N A .11 NEWS Israeli leader praises Mondale New York (JTA) — Premier Shimon Peres of Israel praised Democratic Presidential candi- date Walter Mondale for his " great interest and support for Is- rael," at the end of a 40-minute meeting between the two leaders at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel last week. But Peres, in a brief statement to reporters after the meeting, said that the support for Israel in the United States is bi-partisan. He said, as Mondale stood at his side, that he is not going to get involved in the election cam- paign. After Peres left, Mondale said that he talked with the Israeli leader about two issues: Israel's economic difficulties and the situ- ation in Lebanon. The former Vice President sharply attacked the Mideast pol- icy of the Reagan Administration, charging that as a result of Reagan's lack of personal in- volvement in the Mideast "The United States influence in the Mideast is waning." He said that Reagan has not been "personally involved in any of the negotiations and what we need now is a new policy, an ,- energetic policy of personal inter- vention to move forward." Mondale said that as President he would work for direct negotia2 tions between Israel and its neighbors and let them discuss their differences. He also stressed that he opposes any imposed solu- tion in the Mideast. , Mondale also accused the President of escalating the arms race in the Mideast by supplying advanced weapons to the Arabs In a related development, a study commissioned by Ameri- cans for a Safe Israel concluded that neither Mondale nor Reagan supports the • interests of Israel. The study was conducted by Prof. Ernest Bloch of Adelphi Univer, sity. INTEREST RATE UPDATE AS OF 10-16-84 Based on $2,500 minimum deposit Did Your Bank Pay You This Much Interest This Week? DI 8:30, Sat. til 5 Peres cites 'visual error' on IDF Lebanon pullback Tel Aviv (JTA) — Premier Shimon Peres said Sunday that there was a "visual error" — a misreading both in the U.S. and Israel — of his recent remarks with respect to a future with- drawalof the Israel Defense Force from Lebanon. He also stressed that Israel's plans were not influ- enced by Syria. Peres spoke to reporters on his return from a seven-day visit to the U.S. which included two days of talks with President Reagan, Secretary of State George Shultz, Defense Secretary Caspar Wein- berger and other top Administra- tion officials in Washington. He was accompanied at those meet- ings by Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir. Peres told reporters that what he said before and during his Americanstrip and what he reit- erates now is that within the next three-four weeks the Cabinet will consider various options prepared by the Defense Ministry for an IDF withdrawal from south Lebanon that will ensure the safety of Israel's northern border. Last week, Defense Minister Argentinian doctor wins Nobel Prize New York — Argentinian im- munologist Cesar Milstein was one of three doctors awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine this week. For the past two decades, Dr. Milstein has made major contri- butions to the understanding of the structure, synthesis and gene- tic control of anti-bodies, the pro- teins that battle agents of disease in the body. In particular, he dis- covered, in collaboration with Dr. Georges Kohler (who was also awarded a Nobel Prize), the prin- ciple for producing virtually un- limited amounts of pure monoc- lonal anti-bodies. Yitzhak Rabin said Israel would not withdraw from Lebanon until satisfactory security ar- rangements were made to ensure the safety of northern Israel set- tlements, as laid down in the pol- icy guidelines of the nationa: unity coalition. Rabin's remarks were release by the government information office after a meeting at the De- fense Ministry office in Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, in Washington; the Reagan Administration made it clear again this week that it does not want to be a mediator at this time in the effort for an Israeli- withdrawal from south Lebanon. - State Department spokesman John Hughes stressed that the • United States continues to bein an "exploratory mode" and is "not negotiating nor mediating" be- cause all of the parties involved are "quite far apart." Simchat Torah rally ban is rejected Tel Aviv (JTA) — Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin has re- jected an appeal by the Peace Now movement to ban a Simchat Torah celebration in Hebron planned by Gush Emunim ac- tivists in support of suspected members of a Jewish terrorist un--- derground presently on trial. Peace Now warned that the cel- ebration, including the tradi- tional hakafot parade with To- rahs through the town scheduled last night would be "pure provoca- tion" to the Arab majority in Heb- ron. But Rabin maintained that the celebration was legal. But he said he has instructed. the security forces to 'prevent any disturbances and to confine the celebration to Kiryat Arba, the Jewish township adjacent to Heb- ron which is a Gush Emunim > stronghold. Some legal experts argued that inasmuch as the law -- forbids any expression of support for terrorists, the planned cele- --- 1 bration is in fact illegal. -
