Caspar Weinberger
plans visit to Israel

"Gesher"
UJA Young Leadership Cabinet
Region II Mission to Israel
December 2-11, 1984
Pre-Mission to Prague, Czechoslovakia
November 29-December 2, 1984

Dear Friend:

The Hebrew word "gesher," designating this
series of five UJA Young Leadership Cabinet
Regional Missions, was chosen because they are a
"bridge" between young American Jews and their
Israeli counterparts.
As you scan the highlights of our itinerary,
you will note several opportunities to meet our
opposite numbers in Israel...to celebrate those
things we share... to learn more about how we are
different...to bridge the gap between us...and to
realize that our similarities are more important
than our differences.
There is a permanent bond between us: We
are young members of the world Jewish family, the
leaders of tomorrow in our own spheres and-
together—of the Jewish people. We are indeed
one.
The highlights that follow are only some of
what's in store for you on this mission. Clearly, the
mission will provide a not-to-be-missed chance to
experience the energy, the excitement, the electric-
ity of modern Israel...to encounter in depth its-
our—rich and proud history and heritage.
And, if you select the optional pre-mission,
you will spend unforgettable days in a country that
played so vital a role in the Jewish story.
Join us...cross the bridge!

Sincerely,

11:d Young, Missions Chairman

Washington (JTA) — Defense
Secretary Caspar Weinberger
announced last week that he will
go to Israel in two weeks. Wein-
berger made the announcement
at a briefing for some 100 Jewish
leaders participating in the
United Jewish Appeal's third an- -
nual Hineni national leadership
conference.
He said he had accepted an invi-
tation extended by Israeli Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and
would go to Israel after attending
a NATO meeting in Italy next _
week. According to Weinberger, it
will be his first visit to Israel in
two years.

Austria nixes kudos
for opera singer

Amsterdam (JTA) — The Aust-
rian government, bowing to pro-
tests from Dutch resistance
groups, has revoked its decision to
honor Dutch-born opera singer
Johan Heester who was a Nazi
sympathizer before and during
World War II.
Heester, now 80, moved to Vie-
nna in the 1930s and became an
admirer of Nazism. He gave per-
formances for top Nazis, including
Hitler, Himmler and Reinhardt <
Heydrich. He also performed for
the SS staff officers at Dachau. He
remained in Vienna after the war.
