This leaves about a third still undecided. As Americans, Jewish voters are naturally interested not only in issues concerning Jews specifi- cally but also in general issues such as the federal deficit, reduc- tion of nuclear weapons, cham- pioning of human rights abroad, including protection of the human rights of Jews in the Soviet Union guaranteed by the Universal Dec- laration of Human rights and by the 1975 Helsinki agreement which the Soviets have signed. A key to speculation about likely Jewish political perform- ance in 1984 can perhaps be found in recent polls in which Jews de- fine their basic ideologies: 35 per- cent described themselves as lib- erals, 40 percent as moderates, and 25 percent as conservatives. There are effective Jews work- ing in both parties and on behalf of both tickets. There were more than 300 Jewish delegates — or 9 percent — at the Democratic na- tional convention and 104 dele- gates and alternates — 2.3 per- cent — at the Republican conven- tion. An analysis by the American Jewish Committee establishes that more Jews voted for Mondale than for Gary Hart in the Demo- cratic primaries, possibly as a re- sult of Hart's alleged considera- tion of Jesse Jackson as his vice presidential running mate. Young professionals among Jews in New England- and liberal-left academic Democrats preferred Hart, but the tide swung to Mondale in California because of the Jackson issue, and Jews overwhelmingly favored Mondale in New York. A Gallup poll and other opinion polls estab- lished that about three-quarters of Jews considered Jackson anti- Semitic, less than a tenth did not, and about a fifth were not sure.
