SYLVIA LESSER, 86, former
Detroiter of Playa Del Rey, Calif.,
died Sept. 22. She leaves two
daughters, Mrs. Harold (Pru-

of the B'nai B'rith Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit and an active
Shriner, died Sept. 27 at age 69.
, Born in Windsor, Ont., Mr.
Laker lived 50 years in Detroit.
) He was involved in the National
Home Improvement Council and
in the formation of the Home Im-
prbvement Council of Metropoli-
tan Detroit. He was the owner of
City-Wide Modernization Co. for
more than 30 years.
Mr. Laker was the past
president of Louis Marshall Lodge
(now Marshall-Suburban Lodge)
and a former adviser to an AZA
chapter of the. B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization. He was involved in
forming the first deaf AZA chap-
ter in Detroit. Mr. Laker also was
active in tasks for the B'nai B'rith
Benevolent Fund.
He was the past president of
Crescent Shrine Club and active
in the Shrine committee for crip-
pled and burned children.

vived by a son, Dr. Richard S. of
Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter,
Carol Ruth; a brother, Arthur of

ZELDA MARKOWITZ, 84, died
Sept. 26. She leaves three daugh-
ters, Ms. Irene Stein, Mrs. Arthur
(Marion) Sandberg and Mrs. Lil-
lian Chafets; a sister, Mrs. Rose
Steinhauer of New York; eight
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
DAVID MEYERS, 74, former
Detroiter of Davie, Fla., died Sept.
28. Survived by his wife, Gussie;
two sons, Dennis of Pembroke
Pines, Fla.; and Morton of Davie;
three brothers, Sam of Las Vegas,
Nev., Albert of Southfield and Sol
of Oak Park; a sister, Betty Sher-
man of Los Angeles, Calif.; six
grandchildren and three great-

Attorney Harry Slavin dies at 91
Harry Slavin, an attorney who
practiced in Detroit for 58 years,
prior to his retirement to Florida
10 years ago, died Sept. 28 at age
91.
Born in New York, Mr. Slavin
was the co-author of the original
Michigan Unemployment Secu-
rity Act. He also assisted during
the Franklin Roosevelt Adminis-
tration in developing similar na-
tional legislation. In the 1930s, he
was chairman of the Unemploy-
ment InsUrance League of Michi-
gan.
He was a former legal adviser to
the Social Security Commission
in Detroit. He was a 1915
graduate of the University of De-
troit Law School.
Mr. Slavin was a member of the
Michigan Bar Association.
He leaves his wife, Ruth R.; a

Ida Rosenberg
Ida Rosenberg, who was active
with her late husband and her
sons in Friendship Building
Supplies, died Sept. 27 at age 90.
Born in Poland, Mrs. Rosenberg
was a member of Jewish National
Fund, Keshinover Bessarabia Aid
Society and Berditchover Aid
Society.
She leaves three sons, Lester,
Nat and Edward; 12 grand-
children an& 12 great-grand-
children.
