A former Detroiter, Mrs. Law- ton, widow of Rabbi Irvin Lawton, resided in Sherman Oaks, Calif., at the time of her death. She was the first president of the David-Horodoker Women's Organization. She taught Hebrew from the time she was 18 until she was 65 and worked with study groups and classes in Hebrew lit- erature and history. Mrs. Lawton was a life member of the Jewish National Fund and Hadassah. In California, she was Helen Tobias of Temple Israel, 63 Helen S. Tobias, a member of Jewish organizations, died Sept. 27 atage 63. A native Detroiter, Mrs. Tobias was a member of Temple Israel, past president of the temple sis- terhood and a member of the board of trustees. She also was a member of Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, Sinai Hospital Guild and was a former Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She leaves her husband, Harold; a son, Charles; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Gordon and Terry; her father, Ben Minnye Israel Minnye Smith Israel, a member of Jewish women's organizations, died Sept. 28 at age 94. Born in Baltimore, Md., - Mrs. Israel lived 64 years in Detroit. She was the oldest of five children and outlived them all. Mrs. Israel did volunteer work and knitting for the Red Cross during World Wars I and II. She served as secretary for the Furniture Travelers of Michigan. In 1910, she was graduated from the Female College of Virginia. Mrs. Israel was a former officer of Purity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and worked for Civil Defense during World War II issuing ration books. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Sidney (Claire) Rubin. Celia Perlman Celia Perlman, a member of Jewish communal organizations, died Sept. 29 at age 71. Born in Lima, Ohio, Mrs. Perlman lived 68 years in Detroit. She was a member of Sutton Group of Hadassah, Women's American ORT, Cong. Beth Ab- raham Hillel Moses and its sis- terhood, Sinai Hospital Guild and was a volunteer for Meals-on- Wheels. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. V. Lester (Suzanne) Goldstein; a son, Dr. Lawrence of New York City; and four grandchildren. NEWS Jerusalem to hold book fair in May Jerusalem (JTA) — The 12th Jerusaieni International Book Fair will be held May 5-10, 1985, Mayor Teddy Kollek announced. The fair is expected to attract more than the 1,000 publishers from 36 countries who attended the last Jerusalem Book Fair in 1983. Stocker; a brother, Harold Stocker of Ft. Worth, T_ex • and six grandchildren. Morris Zelenko Morris Zelenko, founder and owner of Zell's Fashions, ladies ready-to-wear, died Sept. 29 at age 77. Born in New York City, Mr. Zelenko founded the business in 1936. He was a member of Adat Shalom Synagogue and B'nai B'rith. He leaves his wife, Mimi; a son, Julian of Israel; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Sheila) Steinger of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Mrs. Esther Bieman; and six grand- children. Bernard Raitt Bernard "Pat" Raitt, former owner of Fay's Style Shop and Four Seasons Suburban, retail women's ready-to-wear shops, died Sept. 24 at age 76. Born in Poland, Mr. Raitt was retired. He was a member of Cong. B'nai Moshe, Pisgah Lodge of B'nai B'rith. He leaves his wife, Neldonna "Nikki"; two sons, Joel and De- nnis; a daughter, Cynthia; a brother, Abe; a sister, Mrs. Louis (Rose) Mintz; and three grand- children. Rhea Gordon dies Rhea Gordon, a member of Jewish women's organizations, died Sept. 25 at age 75. Born in Utica, N.Y., Mrs. Gor- don was a member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Women's Ameri- can ORT and Hadassah. She leaves a son, Harvey; a daughter, Mrs. Byron (Maxine) Canvasser; three brothers, Harris Nathan, Norman Nathan and David Nathan, all of Utica, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. David (Edith) Lip- ton; and six grandchildren. Born in Detroit, Mrs. Goldberg was a life member of Hadassah, a member of Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel Moses and its sisterhood. She leaves three sons, Herbert, Edward and Nathan; three daughters, Mrs. Irwin B. (Madeline) Posner, Mrs. Nat (Lois) Fishman and Mrs. Michael (Sharon) Balamut; two sisters, Mrs. Barnie (Sally) Winer and Mrs. Samuel (Peggy) Glassman; a brother, Jack Katz; 17 grand- children and two great-grand- children. Pharmacist Samuel Pearlstein Pharmacist Samuel Pearlstein was devoted to his drug stores, but his overriding joy was in collect- ing paintings and sculpture. According to his son Mark, Mr. Pearlstein, who died Sept. 27 at age 59, had an "astounding range and depth of knowledge regarding art," which, according to the younger Pearlstein, was self- taught. Mr. Pearlstein had an interest in 10 drug stores at the time of his death. His first store was the Mer- rill Drug Store on Greenfield in Detroit, and that's where he based his operations. Mr. Pearlstein was a member of Cong. Beth Shalom. A native Detroiter, Mr. Pearls- tein is survived by his wife, Sophia; three sons, Mark W. of Swampscot, Mass., Alan S. and Charles L.; and a daughter, Arona A.
