Friday, October 5, 1984 63 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS WISHING ALL A SAFE & HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US AT D.O.E. Shaare Zedek Hospital director to address Detroit affiliates Dr. Michael S. Rosenbluth, di- rector general of the Shaare Zedek Medical Center in , Jerusalem, will address the De- troit Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital at their annual dinner 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Shaare Zedek Hospital is a hos- ital with a long history, having ► ened its doors in 1902. It began in 1873 when a group of Jews in rankfurt, Germany, organized themselves into a committee for the purpose of establishing the first Jewish hospital in the Land of Israel. The tradition those Frankfurt J:,, ws began found expression in the way their hospital sought to function. They, and those who fol- lowed, saw Shaare Zedek as a hospital that treated its patients persons, not merely as medical cases; they saw Shaare Zedek as a ;place that would function as a Jewish hospital with all that the word "Jewish" means: a hospital as much guided by Torah as by medical science. Dr. Rosenbluth is only the fourth director general in the his- , tory of Shaare Zedek Hospital. He, like his predecessors, brings to his position a high level of med- ical training and a deep devotion to the Torah. Shaare Zedek earned its humanitarian reputation very early on, with the arrival of Dr. Moshe Wallach from Cologne, Germany, in 1892 on behalf of the Shaare Zedek Committee. He began an outpatient clinic and pharmacy for the mostly , poverty-stricken Jews of Jerusalem. Ten years later, after the dream of a Shaare Zedek Hos- , vital became a reality, Dr. Wal- lach served as director general. In 1948, Dr. Falk Schlesinger ' assumed the directorship of the hospital and brought a vision of a new Shaare Zedek. The hospital by that time had long outgrown its original stately but inadequate main building designed originally to accomodate only 20 beds. A maze of annexes, additions and temporary structures could not serve the needs of a growing popu- lation of Jerusalemites. The man who succeeded Dr. Schlesinger 20 years later ; Dr. David M. He was educated at the Etz Chayim Yeshiva and Bathurst Heights Collegiate School in To- ronto. Further Jewish studies took him to the Telz Yeshiva in Cleveland. He earned his medical degree at the University of To- ronto and served an internship at the New Mt. Sinai Hospital in To- ronto. He gained specialization in internal medicine and infectious diseases. In 1970, he made aliyah, and continued specialization training in internal medicine at Shaare Zedek. Eight years later, he was appointed senior physician.
