Vereen's Broadway appear- ances include his Tony Award- winning performande in Pippin, in addition to roles in Sweet Char- ity, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair. Performances of his one- man cabaret concert have taken him to the show stages of Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno and Lake Tahoe, and to international performances in England, France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Por- tugal. In 1978, Vereen won the "Entertainer of the Year," "Rising Star" and "Song and Dance Star" awards from the American Guild of Variety Artists. He was the first simultaneous winner of these AGVA awards. Vereen's films include Funny Lady and All That Jazz. His tele- vision appearances include an Emmy Award winning role in the mini-series Roots, a network spe- cial Ben Vereen — His Roots, which won seven Emmy Awards, and numerous other guest ap- pearances. Vereen will appear in the mini-series Ellis Island to be aired this fall. Vereen has also performed with Ben Vereen symphony orchestras, including a recent appearance with the Na- tional Symphony at the Kennedy:_ Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to his entertaiL ment accomplishments, Vereen also has been honored for his humanitarian activities. In 1983, he received the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award. This national award, established by the Israel Bonds organization, was bes- towed in Los Angeles. In 1978, he was the recipient of Israel's Cultural Award, and 1979 Israel's Humanitarian Award. For two consecutive years, 1977 and 1978, the NAACP cited Vereen with its Image Award. For the past three years he has been the international chairman for Sudden Infai Death Syndrome. The 33rd annual Jevirish Book Fair, in which the Jewish Com- munity Center as its major spon- sor, enrolls three score of cooperating organizations, will be held Nov. 10-20 at the main Jewish Center complex in West Bloomfield. Every aspect of Jewish history will be covered by the 27 scheduled programs of authors of current best sellers who will ap- pear on the programs.
