Evidence seen
of Jewish wife abusE

Los Angeles — Fresh evidence
of the widespread scope of Jewish
wife abuse by the husband, once
considered unthinkable and ac-
cordingly non-existent iii tr
Jewish community, has been dis-
closed in the 15-month record of
the Family Violence Project
(FVP), described as the first such
program in the Los Angeles area,
focussed solely on Jewish familie-
s.(JTA) — The Family Violence
Project is offered by the Jewish
Family Service, a beneficiary
agency of the United Jewish Fund
campaign, according to the Los
Angeles Jewish Community
Bulletin, an oficial publication of
the Federation-Council.
The project was initiated by th_P
National Conference of Jewish
Women and is supported by a.
grant from the Jewish Commu-
nity Foundation.
The project, started in May,
1983, has expanded into a net-
work of services,' including job ,
placement, shelter, community
outreach, emergency financial
help, and individual and group
counseling. FVP also works with
Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a legal
aid society for Jews, and also a
UJF beneficiary.

ADL asks retention
of FCC fairness
rules for radio, TV

New York — The Anti-.
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith (ADL) last week warned
that revoking the fairness doc-.
trine rules governing television
and radio stations — including
the "personal attack" rule —
would endanger American
democracy and freedom.
In testimony filed with the Fed-
eral Communications Commis-
sion in Washington, the ADL took
issue with proponents of deregu-
lationof the broadcasting indus-
try.
Under deregulation that would
result in abrogation of the fair-
ness doctrine, ADL argued, it I
would not be possible to call sta-
tions to account for breaches of the
public trust. According to Justin
J. Finger, director of ADL's Na-
tional Civil Rights Division, fair- I
ness doctrine rules for broadcas-
ters are "statutorily required" by
Congress. The rules, he went on,
have been upheld as constitu-
tional by the Supreme Court be-
cause they "protect the public's
First Amendment freedoms of di- I
versity of opinion and free and
open discussion of differing views
as envisaged by the framers of the
Bill of Rights."

sembly late in August.
