a Roman innkeeper, for ship
brokers too busy to go home . . . In
249 C.E., Emperor Heliogabalus
invented the "progressive dinner"
. . . It required guests to go t?
different parts of the city for each
of the 22 courses served.
In 325 C.E., when English
knights offered to "spread the
carpet" for friends, it meant that
they invited them to dinner . . .
those days, "carpets" were tablet-1
loths . . . In 698 C.E., dinner clubs'
were the rage in Constantinople
. . . Everybody belonged to at least'
one . . . Even the slaves had their ,
own . . . The earliest inns were
the Orient, where public house:,
were used as caravan stops . . . In
1125, Spanish innkeepers stimu
lated dinner trade by providing
storytellers for guests . . .
innkeepers of the 15th Century
had a custom whicy may have
suggested an idea for present-day
"doggy bags" ... Diners were
given wrappers to take home the
surplus food which otherwise'
would have been thrown away.
In 1621, any French innkeeper
was liable to arrest and impris-
onment if a patron complained of
a stomachache after eating . . . Ir
1693, all Italian inns went broke
because of a vegetarian fad that
swept all of Italy . . . When dining
in public, upper class Chinese of
the 13th Century followed the ad-
vice: "Eat like a bird" . . . Really
filling meals were eaten in pri-
vate . . . "Restaurant" is believed
to have originated in the mid-16th
Century, when medicinal soup
was called "restorant" . . . One
tavern famous for this soup
called a restaurant by its patrons
. . . Other taverns soon took up the ' l
name . . . The first "drive-in" eat-
ing place was devised by a New
Jersey innkeeper in 1762 . . . Mer
on horseback could ride up to a
special window and eat without
dismounting . . . In 1799, a full-
course dinner in any New York
city restaurant could be obtained
for only 18 cents.
