"But he came in, which
really shocked us," Mrs.
Rosenbaum says.
"We've had children call on
behalf of their parents, too,"
Mrs. Arm adds. "A lot of people
send their friends."
"Just about every major city
has one or more Jewish dating
services," Mrs. Rosenbaum
says. "It's really a growing
field." The service is particu-
larly attractive, she adds, for
people who have just moved to
the Detroit area.
"They just don't know where
to go to meet _people." She and
Mrs. Arm encourage singles to
attend singles events, such as
those offered at the Jewish
Community Center.
The women say their
families have been helpful.
Our husbands are very
supportive. They're really our
consultants," Mrs. Rosen-
Claire Arm
baum says. They give us ad-
vice."
Their children at first found
the idea humorous, but are
now also supportiVe. Mrs. Arm
has three children, two of
whom are married, and three
grandchildren.
They laughed," Mrs. Arm
says. "Oh, the kids thought it
was a riot."
The children are honorary
LO-LA members.
"That's one advantage they
have," Mrs. Rosenbaum says
with a laugh. One of her
daughters, however, is a bit
young for LO-LA right now.
"I have a little girl 11% who
wants to know, when she gets
older, can she join LO-LA?"
For more information on
LO-LA, write P.O. Box 254,
Lathrup Village 48076 or call - -

New York (ZINS) — In 1978,
Zubin Mehta said he would never
conduct orchestras in India or
Russia, countries hostile to Israel.
Now he has taken the New York
Philharmonic on a tour of the Far
East, including five concerts in
Delhi, Calcutta and Bombay.
Mehta popped off about India in
1978 over disagreements with the
Indian government about a tour
with the Israeli Philharmonic. At
that time he angrily said that he
would never conduct in India
until it recognizes Israel.
Now, he says, "I cannot hold the
New York Philharmonic respon-
sible for my statements, and when
I came down to it, could not con-
ceive of an artistic tour without
going to my own country."
According to Harold Schonberg
in the New York Times, Zubin
Mehta has been, for many years,
much more allied professionally
to Israel than to his native coun-
try. The lifetime conductor of the
Israeli Philharmonic, he spends
several months each year there
and is constantly taking the or-
chestra on tour. He finds in Israe:
a people whose beliefs are close to
those he learned as a Parsed. He
has picked up some Hebrew in his
years with the Israeli Philhar-
monic, but mostly he talks Yid-
dish there, with complete fluency,
according to Schonberg.
