His Latin translation of the Old Testament (with Fran- cis Junius) was published in Lon- don in 1580, 1581, and 1585. "Although John Donne has had a major influence on me — I have studied all his poems and sermons — I certainly cannot write as he - does. (Who can?) Nevertheless, his basic ideas, expressed so beau- Aifully as only he can, stayed within my inner self. "Yet my words must be, and are, my own, as I see fit to express my own ideas. "Several times I even differed with Donne's meaning, but this is an unalienable right of the indi- vidualist. And herein lies the great beauty of writing — not only expressing one's self, but the right, to do so on one's own terms. "I shall invoke these rights as poetic license to put forth my own interpretations, as did John Donne, on the Lamentations mod- ified by Tremellius. "I have, deep within me, one important quality that Tremel- lius and Donne did not 'have. "I am a Jew. Lamentations were a part of me the day I was born. To express them is still a normal facet of my type of living. Why? Because we Jews are quite well versed in Lamentations. You might even venture to say, we are specialists." 31 0 0 0 851-29.80 FAMILY DENTISTRY • No fee j -or consultation • New Patients Welcome 547-6100 See Richard Rosenbaum for Special Savings on Lease Cars. Dr. Arnold Gartner of South- field wrote to the DSO's new music director following his debut performance last month. Dr. Gartner also felt that the schedul- ing of a Wagner composition dur- ing a concert that featured vio- linist Itzhak Perlman "showed an insensitivity to Perlman's Jewish background." "I cannot tell you how shocked I was to learn of your reaction to scheduling Wagner's music with Perlman," Herbig replied in a let- ter to Dr. Gartner. "I would never have dreamed that this could cause any tension among our Jewish listeners. It seems to me that the full expression of emo- tions in Wagner's music shows such a deep humanity and it difficult for me to connect his music in any way with the dark age of the Nazi regime." The DSO music director said he would be cautious on matters such as this when drawing up sym- phony programs in the future.
