!Fisher meeting

It's called simply The Fisher
Ieeting — the annual opening of the
llied Jewish Campaign — and its
oal is equally simple: to raise as much
money as possible from the commu-
nity's most generous contributors.
Hosted by Max and Marjorie
'fisher in their lovely Franklin home,
- the meeting is open to a select group of
)etroiters who give $100,000 or more
fo the Allied Jewish. Campaign of the
ewish Welfare Federation.
These are people who do not have
) be persuaded by gifted speakers

from Israel of the need to support the
Jewish state, the local Jewish commu-
nity and Jews around the world. They
know it — logically and instinctively
— and they are ready, even eager, to
help.
That is why on Tuesday evening
the atmosphere was warm and low-
key rather than high-pressure as the
41 people present pledged more than
$7 million to this year's Campaign —
an increase of $1 million over their
contributions of last year. We had ex-
pected a $500,000 increase, but they
doubled that," said a pleasantly sur-
prised Wayne Feinstein, executive
vice president of the Federation.
More than a few of those present
at the meeting paid tribute to their
host as mentor and key role model.
"Max Fisher is a model for tzedakah in
this commmunity," said Jack Robin-
son, co chairman of the meeting and

major gifts chairman of the Campaign.
"Detroit has given Max Fisher to the
world, but we still count him as one of
our own."
- Fisher opened the meeting by
welcoming those present and noting
how pleased he was to see so many

young people. (Indeed, 16 of the 4i
people present were adult sons of
hiajor donors, including current Cam-
paign chairman Stanley Frankel,
whose father, Sam, co-chaired Tues-

Likud infighting
clouding U.S. summit

Internal bickering over
Israel's economy may
harm Shimon Peres'
quick-fix efforts in the U.S.
next week.

WHY BELONG?

On the eve of Yom Kippur, a rabbi's open

being part of a synagogue means being

Jerusalem (JTA) — Serious dif-
ferences over economic policy on the
Likud side of Israel's unity govern-
ment have cast a cloud over Premier
Shimon Peres' weekend trip to Wash-
ington to seek immediate, substantial
increases in U.S. economic aid.
Deputy Premier David Levy
abruptly resigned from the special
ministerial commmittee negotiating
economic matters with Histadrut. At
Sunday's weekly Cabinet meeting he
sharply attacked the economic policies
of Finance Minister Yitzhak Modai
and charged that the unity govern-
ment's new economic measures will
bear down hardest on wage earners.
Levy is a member of Likud's Herut
wing, Modai is a Likud Liberal. Their

quarrel is seen by Observers as another
manifestation of the tension between
Herut and the Liberals which was evi-
dent long before the July 23 Knesset
elections.
Levy's aides are telling the media
that Finance Minister Modai is "shoot-
ing aimlessly in all directions,
cooperating with Peres, surrendering
