Scars don't fade
for terror victim

Best wishes for a
happy, healthy
New Year

BY TERRY BRODIE

Tel Aviv — There's nothing like
a war to calm the nerves. At least
that's the way Nurit Bareket
sometimes feels.
Six years ago, Nurit, her hus-
band Yitzhak, and their teenage
sons, Nir and Rani, were victims
in a PLO bus attack. Traveling
along Israel's coastal highway,
the bus was ambushed by 11
armed terrorists. By the time the
vehicle came to a flaming
standstill, 36 Israelis — 18 of
them bus passengers — and nine
terrorists were dead. Another 82
people were wounded.
What came to be known as A u-
tobus Hadamim (The Bus of
Blood) was only one in a long list
of terrorist attacks on Israeli citi-
zens. These attacks have in-
creased since the defeat of the
PLO in Lebanon in 1982. Nearly
800 Israelis, in Israel and abroad,
have died and more than 3,500
have been wounded in terrorist
attacks since 1965.
But the suffering sometimes
only begins for the survivors. The
Bareket family was the only one
to emerge from the carnage un-
scathed.
Initially, Nurit Baraket, now
45, found it difficult to eat. She
rarely left home. She took a
month off from her job as a secre-
tary. For six months she wouldn't
go out alone at night — an un-
common fear in this country of
relatively little non-political vio-
lent crime. "Every noise made me
jump." she recalls. "I kept hearing
shooting in my head all the time."
Yitzhak, 46, who has a desk job,
also is reminded of the attack at
work: one co-worker, also aboard
the bus, lost his wife, two children
and both legs to terrorist bullets.
Since the attack, Bareket al-
ways packs a pistol — and says he
would use it if threatened again.
He keeps newspaper clippings
about the attack, and a diary so
private that his wife has not read
it.
Nir Bareket, now 21, was
wounded in 1982 in Israel's suc-
cessful effrt to free the coastal city
of Damour, Lebanon, from PLO
domination. The terrorist attack
flashed vividly before him during
the battle, he said, "but then I
realized that this time it was
different because I had a gun and
could defend myself."
