production of sophisticated
technological products, ranging
from laminated plastics to laser
instruments. Net profits in 1983
were recorded at $4.8 million.
Elbit, a leader in the develop-
ment of mini-computers has also
developed weapon delivery, navi-
gation and control systems and
electonic intelligence systems for
military use. Elbit's sales in fiscal
1983 totaled $85.4 million.
American Israeli Paper Mills
showed total sales of $110.1 mil-
lion in 1983. The company, which
controls 95 percent of Israel's
paper production, has developed
ways of making paper from a
variety of products.
Many Israeli companies have
proven to be successful on the
American exchanges, thus paving
the way for expansion, and help-
ing other Israeli firms market
their securities.

Youth center
fosters harmony

The Cultural Community and
Youth Center in Haifa is more
widely, and perhaps more appro-
priately, known as The Arab-
Jewish Friendship Center. While
there are many community and
youth centers throughout Israel,
Beit Hagefen has, for two decades,
been promoting Jewish-Arab
friendship and cooperation.
Zvi Israel, the director of the
center, believes that the two popu-
lations can live together peace-
fully.
The center's 6,000 registered
members (60 percent Arab, 40
percent Jewish) have from the
start been favorably disposed
towards the concept of an equal
interrelationship between the
two, says Israel. Many of the
members are firm believers in the
idea of Jewish-Arab harmony. In
this respect, the center caters to a
specific public. The Arab mem-
bers, citizens of Israel are aware of
the fact that they are members of
an Israeli institution, where loy-
alty to Israel is taken for granted,
as is the belief in equality be-
tween all Israeli citizens, Jews
and Arabs alike.
Set up in Feb. 1963, the center
was the brainchild of the then
mayor of Haifa, Abba Khousky.
Beit Hagefen was conceived as a
center for both the Arab and
Jewish communities, whose clear
purpose was to bring Jews and
Arabs closer together.
Activities and facilities at the
center include a library, tutorial
services, various adult education
classes and cultural programs.
Director Israel puts special em-
phasis on the regular get-
togethers beteen Arab and Jewish
high school students. The gather-
ings between both students and
teachers serve the purpose of
promoting dialogue on Arab-
Jewish relations in all its aspects.
Beit Hagefen received the
"Quality of Life" award from the
Knesset in Dec. 1983 for its efforts
in promoting Jewish-Arab rela-
tions.
