LAWRENCE PASIK MINDY & ALIYA To All Our Relatives and Friends, Our wish for a year filled with happiness, health and prosperity IZRAEL, LILI NANCY BESSER NEWS Single Mothers by Choice (SMBC), a kind of mutual aid society organized by Jane Mattes, a New York City psychotherapist, who described the development and functions of SMBC at a luncheon sponsored by the American Jewish Committee ear- lier this year and elaborated on the rationale and activities of the - group in several telephone inter- views with the Jewish Telegaphic Agency. She said SMBC has a mailing list of about 1,000 women and holds monthly meetings at a nearby church. The group holds "thinkers series" sessions three Monday nights a month, on alter- nate months, to discuss the pros and cons of unwed motherhood. Attendance at those sessions is restricted to ten women so that their concerns can get thorough attention. The group also holds two social events each year and 65 members attended the most recent one. In- dicating she did not know the per- sonal histories of many of the members, including a number of out-of-town members, Ms. Mattes estimated that about half of the unwed mothers are Jewish. About 75 percent of the unwed mothers use artificial insemina- tion because they feel it is not fair to involve a man in such a situa- tion, according to the psychotherapist. She said a great deal of information is available about the donor of the sperm, in- cluding whether he is Jewish, his race, his family background and related information. The group, small in number ini- tially, began meeting in 1981 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization under state law in 1983. De Roy played integral part in auto history Detroiters have always revered their automotive legends — men such as Henry Ford, the Fishers, Lee Iaccoca and Aaron De Roy. Aaron De Roy? The Jewish auto executive may not be a household name, but to many, De Roy's role in Motor City history was just as important as the roles of other, more familiar pioneers. De Roy, who was born in Pittsburgh 104 years ago, came to Detroit in 1923. The Pittsburgh Studebaker distributor worked for the Hudson Essex Automobile Co. upon his arrival before found- ing the De Roy Car Co. A well-known business and civic leader, De Roy was active in the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association and contributed to the creation of the Detroit Zoo. Among his zoo contributions was a gift of two giraffes. In addition to his passion for cars, De Roy possessed a love for the water and his yacht, the Yoreda (A. De Roy spelled back- wards), was launched in Bay City durign the spring of,1929. Ironically, De Roy was killed in an automobile accident near Hartsville, S.C. in 1935.
