to eat according to pocket and
taste.
It used to be said that the Is-
raelis were great but their cook-
ing was nothing to write home ab-
out. Today, it can rightly be
claimed that Israel has retained
the traditions of Jewish ethnic
cuisine while reaching interna-
tional standards in its cooking.
The results, to put it simply, are
delicious.

Gilo housing
young to old

BY DAVID HOLZEL

Gilo — "You'll like visiting
here, but not as much as I like
living here," 81-year-old Clare de
Picciotto tells her guests.
De Piccitto has spent the past
two years at the Sheltered Hous-
ing Project for senior citizens in
Gilo, a Jerusalem suburb. "I am
happy here," she said. "I like
being with people my own age,
who have also lived a long time
and know what things were like
years ago. But I also like being
with the younger families who
live here."
A native of France who has
lived in Israel since 1957, de Pic-
ciotto is one of 60 senior citizens in
this development. The housing
project helps them maintain their
independence with special serv-
ices and rent based on their in-
come.
Salaries, social activities and
special equipment for the facility
are paid by Eshel, the Association
for Planning and Development of
Services to the Aged, thanks in
part to the more than $2 million
allocated to Eshel by the Ameri-
can Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee (JDC).
"Residents here come from
many lands, including Russia,
Morocco, Romania and Turkey,"
Uri Laor, Eshel's director said.
"Many had been living in dilapi-
dated housing, in Israel's de-
velopment towns, before coming
here."
"It is good that there is a place
like this for people like me, de Pic-
ciotto said. "I can still do things
for myself, but I know it is impor-
tant to have others around."

New York (JTA) — Two mas-
sive changes in American social
patterns — the emergence of a
growing number of upwardly
mobile, well-paid women profes-
sionals, including Jewish women
professionals, and the unprece-
dented liberalization of sexual
mores — may have produced a de-
velopment unique in western
society: an organized and growing
group of American women who
choose to have children out of
wedlock.
Many of them are members of
