distinct educational alternatives
— the religious and the secular.
The religious schools strongly
emphasize Orthodox education.
The secular schools, on the other
hand, teach the Bible as literature
and history, with far less atten-
tion given to the Jewish religion
per se. Either alternative satisfies
most families, but not all.
The Frankel School is the result
of the efforts of a group of parents
to create a middle path. The par-
ents take pride in their Jewish-
ness and want their children to do
so as well. They do not, however,
subscribe to an Orthodox way of
life.
Another unique feature of the
school is the direct involvement of
the parents in the educational
process. Some parents involve
themselves in after-school pro-
grams and /extra-curricular ac-
tivities.
The curriculum, new to the Is-
raeli school system, has been de-
veloped based on secular as well
as Torah studies. The emphasis,
however, is placed on an ac-
ceptance of religious diversity.
Barbara Levine, the principal of
the school describes the school
environment as one which prom-
otes openness and one which pro-
vides an ample opportunity for
what parents and school officials
consider a healthy questioning of
tenets.
The school, which opened its
doors to 33 students in 1976, today
has approximately 530 students
in eight grades. Plans for a junior
and senior high school program
are being considered for next
year.
The success of the school and
the desire among many Israelis to
find some middle ground between
the existing educational alterna-
tives, has led to the planning of
schools similar to this one
throughout Israel.

U.S. insurance
firms reported
helping Nazis

Washington — A number of
American insurance companies
provided the Nazis with informa-
tion that helped them find and
sink merchant ships bound for
Europe during World War II,
Parade magazine reported re-
cently.
According to the magazine,
when war broke out in 1939, sev-
eral underwriters saw no reason
to alter their practice of cabling
their European partners with the
names, contents and routes of the
vessels they insured — including
those carrying war supplies to
Britain.
When columnists Walter Win-
chell, Drew Pearson and Robert S.
Allen uncovered the facts, the in-
surance companies denied the
charges. The U.S. Justice De-
partment eventually stepped in
and some firms began self-
censorship, but the cables contin-
ued until the passage of the Es-
pionage Act in 1943.
