then return to Israel." And a sig-
nificant number of overseas stu-
dents coming to study in Israel do
eventually return to make their
home here.
Yet Gutman does not claim
these programs are oriented
toward encouraging aliyah. "Stu-
dents don't get very integrated
into Israeli life in their short stay
here." And Spielman confirms
that the English-speaking stu-
dents tend to choose other
English-speaking students as
friends, especially since they are
all placed together in the dormit-
ory."
Spielman and Gutman also
agree that even if students don't
come to live here, the time spent
in the country has brought them
closer to Zionism, Judaism and
the State of Israel, and when they
go back they have a stronger
commitment and are more closely
involved in working on behalf of
Israel on their own campuses.
The overseas programs in Is-
raeli universities are recognized
for credit transfer by over 100
universities in North America.
Apart from the programs of-
fered by Israel's universities, the
World Union of Jewish Students
(WUJS) offers a five month pro-
gram in Arad which includes
some of the courses on Judaism
and Israel offered by the univer-
sities. However, WUJS is geared
more towards students who wish
to make their home in Israel.

Actress went
from kibbutz
to stardom

With acclaimed performances
in An Officer and a Gentleman
and Terms of Endearment among
her credits, Debra Winger has be-
come one of Hollywood's top
young actresses. But a movie
career hasn't always figured so
prominently in Winger's plans,
the Detroit Free Press reportedly
recently.
According to the Free Press, the
28-year-old Jewish actress, who
grew up in Cleveland and Los
Angeles, ran away from home at
16 to live on an Israeli kibbutz.
Winger even spent some of her
time in Israel training with the
army before returning to the
United States.
The actress' career took off fol-
lowing a small role in the 1978
move Thank God It's Friday. She
appeared in Urban Cowboy, Can-
nery Row and Mike's Murder be-
fore co-starring with Richard
Gere in Officer and Shirley Mac-
Laine in Terms, two roles which
netted Winger Oscar nomina-
tions.

their planes might cross the sac-
