son, 16, are optimistic and
future-oriented.
"For a survivor, living in Israel
is a positive thing," he adds. "We
have taken responsibility for our
lives in every way, because this is
our own country, for better and for
worse."

Cult groups
pose dangers

New York — Although it is not
known how many young children
belong to religious cults around
the world, the Task Force on Mis-
sionaries and Cults, a project of
the Jewish Community Relations
Council of New York, reports that
there are some 5,000 children in
one group — the European-based
Children of God — alone.
Most children are bore into a
cult, according to the task force.
Others are brought in when one or
both parents join. Still others are
being directly targeted for re-
cruitment. Many observers be-
lieve groups all over the country
are seeking foster children to
raise as adherents. The Tony and
Susan Alamo Foundation is ask-
ing unwed expectant mothers to
turn their children over to it in-
stead of seeking abortions.
Religious cults generally usurp
parental authority and attempt to
break down family structure and
bonds. Children may be separated
from parents and siblings and
raised by others in the group.
Many parents claim the groups
do not let them see the children,
do not honor their legal visitation
rights, or do not turn the children
over when they gain custody.
Some assert cult leaders hide
children by transferring them to
other headquarters throughout
the world.
Children in cults are sometimes
physically isolated from the out-
side world, and often not
adequately educated. Sometimes
they must live in crowded and un-
sanitary conditions. They fre-
quently work long hours doing
hard physical labor or fund rais-
ing. Often they must endure med-
ical neglect, sexual abuse and
harsh physical punishments.
What can be done to improve
the lives of children in these
groups? According to the task
force, child abuse laws should be
- enforced so that children who are
physically or sexually abused are
permanently removed from the
group; state authorities should
assure that children go to outside
schools or that the group's educa-
tional facilities meet good
standards; authorities should
monitor health and sanitation
code violations in cult living quar-
ters; and those who neglect chil-
dren's health should be held le-
gally accountable.

dangers posed by cult groups, con-
