portends the death of Moses. This
time, when the recitation of the
poem is done, there is no dancing.
Rather, on that very day, God tells
Moses to climb Mount Nebo, the
place where he will die. It seems
an•abrupt and harsh transition in
the light of the impassioned lyri-
cism which has just gone before.

Hearkening back to that mo-
ment at Meribath-kadesh, we re-
member that God commanded
Moses to order the rock to yield its
water, and that instead Moses
struck it with his rod. It was in
tha+ one instance that Moses did
not trust the poWer of words,
neither his own nor those of God.

And so, indeed, it is fitting that
on the very day that Moses exalts
God through a great burst of
poetry and song, and exhorts the
people to take to heart all his ut-
terances and verbal warnings, he
is called to account for his own
inability to heed the spoken word.
