THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 28, 1984 Serving B'nai B'rith Members CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR WITH A LOW COST AUTO LOAN To All Our Relatives and Friends, COVENANT CREDIT UNION Phone 552-8111 25835 Smithfield Road Our Wish for a Year Filled with Happiness, Health and Prosperity 111111111151KW9111111111 urged direct Washington-Moscow negotiations for "a comprehensive resolution" of the Soviet Jewry is- sue, including emigration, the prisoners of conscience and a "clear articulation of the principle of non-harassment of the unoffi- cial Jewish study groups." Meanwhile, the Student Strug- gle for Soviet Jewry reported that 18 Jews in three Soviet cities sent an open letter to Konstantin Chernenko stating that "we, as many other Jews, are very wor- ried by the current worsening of persecutions aimed at frightening us and curbing the movement for repatriation to Israel." The open letter which, accord- ing to the SSSJ, came after the arrests of the unofficial Jewish teachers, stated that this, the hardening of the prison conditions for POCs, and the anti-Jewish drumbeat in the Soviet media "prove to us that Jewish life in the USSR, a multi-national country, is no longer possible." Meanwhile, members of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit's telegram bank participated in a nationwide effort to advise the President and Democratic Presidential candi- date Walter Mondale that the in- tensified Soviet government- sponsored anti-Semitism and at- tacks against Jews seeking to be repatriated to Israel demand at- tention as a priority agenda item at any meetings with Soviet offi- cials. No holiday leave for jailed Jewish terror suspects - Jerusalem (JTA) — The 20 sus- pected members of a Jewish ter- rorist underground on trial for al- leged attacks against Arabs in the occupied territories and Jerusalem over the past four years will not be allowed to leave prison for the High holidays, it was learned here Monday. Haim Barley (Labor), the Minister of Police, made a state- ment to that effect in the Knesset at the conclusion of the debate on separating the Police Ministry from the Interior Ministry. He also said he did not intend to change the custom according to which a defendant does not re- ceive leave before a trial is con- cluded. Barley expressed surprise that a group of 60 rabbis had signed a petition to release the under- ground defendants for the holi- days, although the prisons are fil- led with some 7,000 prisoners — among them many religious and observant Jews. The petition was signed by some of the leading rabbis in the country, among them the Chief Rabbis, and former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The main argument for the release of the underground defendants was that Arab detainees in the Ansar detention camp in south Lebanon were given leave on Moslem holi- days.
