United Nations (JTA) — The
newly elected president of the
39th session of the United Na-
tions General Assembly called on
the United States and the Soviet
Union last week to co-operate in
the convening of an international
peace conference on the Mideast
under UN auspices.
The new president, Ambas-
sador Paul Lusaka, who has re-
presented Zambia at the UN for
six years, said that although the
UN has little or no influence re-
garding the solution of the
Mideast conflict, the Security
Council, with resolution 242, had
outlined the principles for an
equitable Mideast peace.
The UN's Palestinian Rights
Committee has also called for an
international peace conference on
the Middle East. The Committee
has expressed the view that such a
gathering will provide an oppor-
tunity for the parties concerned to
participate in negotiations which
should lead to "a just solution of
the problem."
The Palestinian Rights Com-
mittee stated that "positive action
by the Security Council to act on
the committee's recom-
mendations would advance pros-
pects for a just and lasting peace
in the Middle East." The commit-
tee made the suggestion in its an-
nual report to the General As-
sembly detailing its work for the
past year. The report was adopted
last week.
