School district
would obey order
to halt Bible clubs

The superintendent of a west-
ern Michigan school district said
last week that he would suspend
lunch-hour meetings of Bible
clubs in two of the district's
elementary schools if ordered to
by a judge.
Tri-County Area School Dis,-
trict Superintendent Robert Mil-
ler made the promise last Wed-
nesday, after the State Board of
Education voted unanimously to
seek a lawsuit against the district
based in Howard City, north of
Grand Rapids. The eight-member
board, at the request of Stag-'
Schools Superintendent Phillip
Runkel, approved the action in a
half-hour meeting Wednesday
morning.
State officials feel that the
Bible meetings, on school prem=
ises during school hours, violate.
the constitutional separation cf
church and state. The lunch-hour
sessions were to begin early next
month.

UNIFIL talks

Jerusalem (JTA) — Brian Ur-
quhart, the United Nations
Undersecretary General, wound
up a Middle East tour over the
weekend with meetings with top,
Israeli officials, dealng mainly
with the situation in Lebanon.
Sources said Urquhart was anx-
ious to discern whether there is
any shift in Israel's attitude
toward the United Nations
Interim Force in Lebanon (IN-
IFIL) since the Labor-Likud unity_
government replaced the Likuk-
led regime. The UN has long ad-
vocated an expanded role for UN=
IFIL in south Lebanon, enabling
Israel to pull its forces out. Such a
view is shared by Israeli Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The UN-
IFIL mandate comes up for re-'
newal by the Security Council on
Oct. 19.
