Jerusalem — The absorption of
Falashas (Ethiopian Jews) into
the Jewish state is posing major
challenges to Israeli society, ac-
cording to Yehuda Dominitz, di-
rector general of the Jewish
Agency's immigration and ab-
sorption department.
But that smooth integration is
necessary, Dominitz said earlier
this month, "for us to avoid the
need for another Project Renewal
(massive government aid for the
needy) program in 10-15 years."
More than 5,000 Falashas have
reportedly emigrated to Israel,
many wth problems that require
immediate attention such as de-
hydration and malnutrition. Ac-
cording to Dominitz, these Jews
must not only learn Hebrew,
marketable skills and how to deal
with the Israeli bureaucracy, but
must also adjust to the shock of a
new culture that includes
airplanes and automobiles.
