New York — Uri Gordon, head
of Youth Aliyah for the World
Zionist Organization, said "the
absorption and education of the
wave of Ethiopian immigrant
youth posed one of the greatest
challenges in Youth Aliyah's half
century of existence."
Noting that more than a quar-
ter million children had been edu-
cated within the Youth Aliyah
framework, Gordon said, "This
particular aliyah has already
brought some one thousand
Ethiopian youngsters to our vil
lages." He continued to report
that a successful effort was being
made to bring them into the
mainstream of Israel while at the
same time making it possible for
them to retain their distinctive
culture.
Gordon said that Youth
Aliyah's Leadership Develop-
ment Program is designed to
create a cadre of Ethiopian youth
who will be a bridge between the
Youth Aliyah staff and the new
arrivals.
